Canoo unveils an electric pickup truck that looks unique and packs some serious utility and practicality.
The electric pickup truck segment is on fire. Some of the hot models that have been announced so far include the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, Bollinger B2, Lordstown Endurance, Ford F-150 Electric, and how can we forget, the other-worldly Tesla Cybertruck. All brands will battle each other to become the king of the pickup truck segment soon. But the list doesn’t end here.
Looks Unlike Any Pickup Truck to Date
California-based electric startup Canoo has also revealed a fully-electric mini pickup truck, making its foray into this already crowded segment. We must say, it has the most unique design we’ve seen on a pickup so far, of course, except the Tesla Cybertruck. It doesn’t have a muscular aesthetic with sharp edges that we see on most models these days. Instead, it features a curvy exterior with a bubbly-looking front fascia highlighted by that large rounded windshield that stretches to the roof. In addition, those inverted T-shaped LED headlights and taillights, beefy front bumper, underbody skid plates, and wide wheel arches with meaty tires add to the pickup’s robust appearance.
Canoo Focused on Utility and Storage
Notably, the Canoo pickup truck packs more than just a unique design; it’s a complete utility vehicle that is all about space and storage. The 1828mm (6-foot) long and 1,627mm (5.4-foot) wide bed is extendable to 2438mm (8-foot) using a pull-out extension. As a result, Canoo’s pickup could store large items such as a 4 x 8-foot sheet of plywood. Furthermore, the extended bed can be outfitted with dividers to keep everything in place. Perimeter lighting surrounds the bed walls, and there is also an overhead light for greater visibility.
The pickup itself measures 184-inches (15.4-feet) long and 76-inches (6.4-feet) wide, and an overall cargo capacity of 816kg (1800-pounds). Canoo even hid a storage compartment in the front fascia, featuring a fold-down worktable and multiple charging outlets. Flip-down tables are also present in the side panels, which you can fold and turn into accessible workbenches.
Canoo’s pickup has an optional roof rack in varying sizes for customers that need additional space. Meanwhile, there is a hidden slide-out step installed on the side panel for easier access to the truck bed or the optional roof rack, which comes with extra storage.
It Utilizes the Brand’s Ultra-Flat Skateboard Platform
The factor behind this pickup truck’s ample storage is Canoo’s ultra-flat skateboard platform. The unit integrates all-electric and mechanical components, such as motors, batteries, drive-by-wire steering and brakes, suspension, and other essential elements to be “as flat as possible.” Offered in a dual-motor or rear-motor configuration, the Canoo pickup truck produces up to 600 hp and 745Nm (600lb-ft) of torque. The automaker estimates a range of around 200-miles (300km).
Preorders for the Canoo electric pickup truck will start from the second quarter this year, but deliveries will not begin until early 2023. Complete specifications and pricing details would be available once the pickup enters production.
