Perhaps the best supercar from the 80s, the Porsche 959 SC, is now reimagined to perfection in the hands of the true restoring expert, Canepa.
The Porsche 959 graced the world in 1987, but at the time, many did not understand its actual value. The features of the supercar were far beyond its time — with 444 hp 2.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six and a high-tech suspension, the 959 SC was one of the most dream-like vehicles ever built. But Porsche only produced 300 units of this beauty, and tragically, the model never reached the U.S. market.
Enter Bruce Canepa, a man famous for restoring classics. His team played a crucial role in the federal legalization of the 959 SC back in the day. Also, Bruce was interested in adding more glory to this supercar — and thus began the work for Porsche 959 SC Reimagined.
The sheer number of hours Canepa spent is enough to awe any onlooker — each car takes 4000 hours to finish. The company will build only 50 units, and one of them has recently been on sale in California. Painted in a color that reminds us of American Money, the chassis #003 Reimagined is here to stun.
But the best thing about Canepa’s 959 SC Reimagined is that it comes with modern upgrades — the engine receives new IndyCar-sourced BorgWarner turbos and a new ECU, bringing it to 800+ hp and 650 lb/ft of torque. Other improvements include low friction bearings, upgraded camshaft housings, and a new valvetrain assembly that works better at higher rpms. Canepa also includes an E85/flex fuel hardware.
Interestingly, Canepa didn’t choose the regular 959, which featured a height-adjustable suspension that enabled the supercar to go off-roading. The reason for that is weight — the regular 959 was quite a heavy car. Hence, Porsche launched a lighter, motorsport-inspired 959 SC version with a regular suspension that served as the basis for Canepa’s Reimagined.
Notably, the restomod sits on a dual coil-over system from Penske with titanium coil springs that sits 1 inch closer to the ground, giving it a better stance but also more agile handling. The brake system and the tires get an upgrade, too — cryo-treated rotors are accompanied by lightweight 18-inch alloys custom designed by Canepa.
Clients can get their Reimagined Porsche 959 SC in any color out of the 150+ Paint-to-Sample color palettes. The restoration process is very demanding — each panel of the original car has been stripped and dipped in acid, then prepared for the paint treatment.
As for the interior, Canepa has chosen to go with an elegant look that gives a sense of completion to the Restomod. In the case of Chassis #003, dark green complements the outer Emerald — unique stitching, leather dashboard, and rich carpeting decorate the car’s inside. High-tech features are present, too, with a new Classic Radio Navigation system taking the main lead.
The price of the Restomods is not fixed — each restoration is unique as per a client’s request, so the price varies accordingly. With only 47 more remaining on the list, you’ll have to hurry up with a cartload of cash if you wish to make one of these yours.
