Bugatti Veyron’s Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils Replacement Costs Well Over $20,000

Bugatti Veyron’s spark plugs and ignition coils cost as much as a new Nissan Sentra!

When buying a hypercar, surely you’ll be getting a lot of extras in many aspects, such as speed, power, engineering complexity, and even price tag — and that’s no exception for a Bugatti Veyron. It’s equipped with a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine producing 987 hp and 922 lb-ft of torque, enabling the car to go well beyond 250 mph. And with a starting price of merely $2 million, you can imagine its maintenance cost will be just as premium.

Recently, Reddit user Fixitsteven posted the excruciating process and humongous cost of replacing the Veyron’s spark plugs and ignition coils, which required 35 hours of excruciating work and cost well over $20,000!

At 15,000 miles on the clock, the Veyron was considered a high-mileage unit when it came to the shop. At that time, Steven felt the car was losing power when going over 140 mph. After a thorough inspection by the Justrolledintotheshop workshop, the French hypercar turned out to be misfiring on cylinders #13 and #16.

As you may expect, the process was quite extensive. It required removing multiple costly body panels to gain access to the engine bay, and even reaching the spark plugs and ignition coils was a challenge on its own. For instance, just to access cylinders #13 and #16, Steven had to remove the charge pipes and over 100 zip ties of wiring harnesses.

The replacement spark plug cost $170 each, despite being ironically shared with other VW models equipped with $18 spark plugs — but you didn’t expect Bugatti replacement parts to be cheap, did you? As for the ignition coils, they cost $730 each and took over a month to arrive. Nonetheless, Steven claims the whole thing was still a whole $8,000 cheaper than the Bugatti dealer, charging 40-50 hours of labor at $440/hour instead.

We thank Steven for sharing his Bugatti Veyron’s maintenance journey and showing us the true cost of owning a Bugatti — although nobody really thought that maintaining a Bugatti would ever be cheap.
