The BMW CE 04 has finally arrived as a futuristic all-electric scooter that opens up a whole new chapter in two-wheel urban mobility.
BMW Motorrad first showcased its next-generation electric urban commuter in 2017, with the presentation of the ‘Concept link.’ This highly advanced e-scooter gained popularity when the Definition CE 04 concept was unveiled in November last year and is now finally entering production, ushering in a new era of electric two-wheelers.
Electric drive, zero emissions, and all-around connectivity are three themes carried over to the BMW CE 04. According to BMW, this electric scooter incorporates the same battery cell technology as the upcoming iX SUV. At its heart is a liquid-cooled synchronous motor delivering a nominal 20 horsepower and a maximum of 42 horsepower with a max torque of 48 lb-ft. The company claims a 0-31 mph sprint in 2.6 seconds and 0-62 mph in 9.1 seconds, while the top speed is restricted to 75 mph.
Power for the electric system comes from an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion battery capable of providing a range of up to 80 miles. Charging it from zero to full takes 4 hours 20 minutes with the 2.3 kW on-board charger, or from 20% to 80% in 3.5 hours, while the optional 6.9 kWh fast charger recharges it completely in only 1 hour 40 minutes. Meanwhile, those who do not require such performance can opt for the slightly less potent model with a 31 hp drivetrain and a range of 62 miles.
BMW‘s e-scooter is constructed around a tubular steel trellis frame with a conventional 35 mm telescopic front fork and a single rear shock absorber offset to the left side. Braking duties are handled by a dual-disc setup up front and a single disc at the back, all measuring 265 mm. Furthermore, the CE 04 is equipped with best-in-class safety systems, which BMW says is equivalent to its combustion-powered motorcycles. It features Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and ABS as standard, while Dynamic Traction Control and ABS Pro are optional.
The CE 04 adopts three driving modes – ECO, Rain, and Road – that can be selected based on the type of terrain traversed. Additionally, the optional Dynamic mode allows the electric scooter to accelerate even faster.
In terms of design, the BMW CE 04 stays very faithful to the previous concepts with its futuristic structure and aggressive styling that stand out in the crowd. The main highlights are a large front end, muscular side fairings, full LED lighting front and back, and a flat floating seat. Connectivity is ensured thanks to a standard 10.25-inch TFT color display with integrated GPS navigation.
Of course, such advanced features and cutting-edge tech do not come cheap. Indeed, the BMW CE 04 will start at $12,000. First deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2022. We’ll keep you posted!
