All-New 2023 BMW X1 Grows in Size and Style

The 2023 BMW X1 will be available with an electric powertrain, but only across the Atlantic — North America will only get a regular gas variant.

On the outside, the 2023 BMW X1 flaunts advanced design elements and premium character. However, the design is more of an evolution rather than a revolution, with the usual black trim that resembles other models in the BMW X family.

Fortunately, BMW resisted the urge to put the huge vertical kidneys, instead opting for square-like radiator grilles along with a more chiseled pair of headlights. Moreover, the front full-LED headlights feature a more dynamic design, while the L-shaped taillights give the rear end a more muscular appearance. The 2023 BMW X1 is available in four new colors: Blue Bay Lagoon, Cape York Green, Utah Orange, Space Silver, and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Gray.

For a compact “sports activity vehicle,” the new X1 has ironically gotten larger than the previous model. The crossover is now longer by 1.7 inches (43 mm), wider by 0.9 inches (22.9 mm), and 1.7 inches (43 mm taller). Naturally, the larger dimensions created more room for both passengers and cargo, which will undoubtedly be welcomed by buyers. Still, it will be interesting to see if the larger X1 eats into the X3 sales.

Inside, the 2023 X1 comes with a wide array of tech goodies and features, including the advanced BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment system. It packs a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a central info display stretching 10.7 inches diagonally, merged to look like one large unit.

Meanwhile, BMW included a smartphone tray with wireless charging capabilities alongside the two cupholders. What’s interesting is that the company designed the storage to keep the phone visible to the driver, but is that a good idea, especially with it being so low?

The 2023 X1 will be available with gas, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. Unfortunately, North America will only get the gas version, the 2023 X1 xDrive28i (America). This model packs the same 2.0-liter Twin Power Turbo four-cylinder, tweaked to 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It will come exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and AWD, helping it make the 0-60 sprint in just 6.2 seconds.

Meanwhile, Europe will get the iX1 xDrive30, an all-electric variant with a 313-hp twin-motor configuration. The EV will make the 0-62 mph sprint (0-100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds and provide 257-272 miles of range.

The 2023 X1 will start at $39,595 in the US (including destination charge), but as always with BMW, options will be costly!
