Mercedes’ compact SUVs just got a facelift and a little electric boost.
After releasing its facelifted A-Class and CLA-Class a few months ago, Mercedes has also updated its compact SUV line, including the GLA and GLB SUVs, with a refreshed look, a mild-hybrid system addition, the latest MBUX infotainment system, and several new attractive options.
Starting with the design, the German manufacturer went for new bumpers, a slightly different grill, a new “spectral blue metallic” color option, and a dual “power dome” (slight bulge on the hood), an AMG-exclusive feature until now — not much but definitely a nice touch.
Moving to the side, there’s not much to report since the bodyline was kept pretty much identical. However, Mercedes now offers new 17 to 20-inch wheels for both models as well as new headlights and taillights with interesting patterns for a sleeker look.
Regarding the new hybrid system, both Mercedes GLA and GLB get a 48-volt mild hybrid and a second-generation belt-driven starter-generator (RSG). The benefits of implementing the mild hybrid are plenty, from smoother engine starts to a temporary juice boost of 13 hp for quicker acceleration.
Interestingly, the mild-hybrid system applies to both the non-AMG 250 and AMG 35 models, making the already-punchy 2.0-liter turbos produce 221 hp and 302 hp, respectively, and even more on certain occasions. Not to mention Mercedes also retained the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, providing rapid gear changes under sporty driving conditions.

Inside the cabin, you’ll be greeted with Mercedes’ latest twin-spoke steering wheel and dual 10.25-inch screens accommodating a digital gauge cluster and Merc’s proprietary MBUX infotainment system. The system offers three new driver display styles and ten ambient light color presets. Moreover, Mercedes now offers the GLA and GLB with several new interior color schemes and optional AMG performance bucket seats.
Other notable updates include a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree parking camera, a better sound system, full LED headlights for all variants with high beam assist, and a bunch of other driver assistant features.
Mercedes claims all models should hit your local dealer sometime later this year. While prices are still unknown, we can assume they’ll cost a little more than their predecessors, if only because of the mild hybrid update.
