All-New 2023 Mercedes GLC Comes Exclusively with Hybrid Powertrains

Mercedes introduced the 2023 GLC as a brand-new model with an all-hybrid powertrain lineup, though with a largely similar design to the predecessor.

The GLC first came out over a decade ago as the GLK, and it has managed to remain one of the company’s best sellers. This puts additional pressure on the new model, which would have to take on its usual German rivals (BMW X3 and Audi Q5), but also the new Lexus NX and Genesis GV70, and all-electric contenders like the Tesla Model Y.

The 2023 GLC will initially be available in two variants — the GLC 300 RWD and the GLC 300 4MATIC AWD. Both models have the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 producing 258 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator providing a 23 hp boost for shorter periods and a 9-speed auto. The ISG plays a role in smoother starts and cruising and shutting the engine down at low speeds.

The performance will also be similar, with a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds and a 130-mph top speed on both versions. However, Mercedes-Benz promised more powertrains arriving soon, including more powerful mild-hybrid powertrains and plug-in hybrids.

Mercedes-Benz went mellow when tweaking the exterior design, resembling the current model. But as they say, ‘the devil is in the details.’ Notably, the 2023 GLC is 2.4 inches longer than the predecessor, while the wheelbase is extended by 0.6 inches for considerable improvement in rear-seat legroom. This created a 1.2-inch longer overhang behind the rear axle, which the GLC’s product manager exclaimed was a solution to the customer’s constant complaint of lower storage space.

Furthermore, the streamlined body resulted in a better drag coefficient of 0.29 Cd (0.31 for the current model), resulting in better efficiency and less noise. Another interesting upgrade is the ‘transparent hood’ feature giving a view under the front of the vehicle using a 360-degree camera system.

There is no official news regarding the pricing of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC yet, but the upgrades in tech and equipment will surely influence the price pushing it a little over the previous models.

The expected release in the US is in 2023, along with a plug-in hybrid model, whose details are yet to be confirmed.
