2022 Ford Expedition Arrives With New Looks and Timberline Edition

Ford unveiled the latest edition of the Expedition with a design refresh and several other features!

The Expedition is Ford’s top-of-the-line SUV, and for good reasons. It’s a versatile beast that is up to the task no matter what you throw at it. It started life out in 1997 under the Lincoln Navigator nameplate but the Detroit-based manufacturer soon took over and carved a new niche in this segment, doing pretty good over the years. Now, the latest iteration of the behemoth receives a new facelift and several improvements—enough for the company to label it as ‘the smartest, most powerful and off-road capable Expedition yet!’

“Expedition is more than family transportation. It’s a full-size SUV that allows families to share adventures and make connections confidently and comfortably.” Said Kumar Galhotra, President, America’s and International Markets Group, Ford.

To keep things well-defined and purpose-built, Ford will offer the Expedition in several variants, including Premium, XL, Stealth Edition Performance Package, and the off-road spec Timberline series. Each trim carries a distinct set of features and design elements that brings out its own personality. Still, common design elements amongst the lot include revised all-LED headlamps with D-shaped DRLs, Expedition, and Ford badging on the hood and grille areas, bodywork accents, and definitely rugged styling.

Aside from these commonalities, the Timberline edition includes a unique grille with orange accents, a raised ground clearance of 10.6 inches, reinforcements borrowed from the Raptor (skid plates, under-body protection), and 33-inch all-season Goodyear Wrangler AT tires. On the other hand, a quick glance at the Stealth Edition Performance reveals sporty gloss-black accents on the front grille, mirror caps, roof rails, rear bumper skid plate, fog lamp bezels, and red-brake calipers behind 22-inch aluminum wheels.

The SUV features the familiar yet decently powerful powertrain, housing a 3.5-liter twin-turbo Ecoboost V6 that churns out 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque in its standard form. The range-topping Stealth Edition and Timberland receive a slightly tuned version that ekes out an impressive 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, which makes it the most powerful vehicle in its class. Ford prides on this fact by putting it against the Jeep Wagoneer and Chevy Tahoe RST, with a deficit of 48 hp and 106 lb-ft versus 85 hp and 127 lb-ft, respectively. And to make sure it performs just as well on trails as it looks, the Timberline is bolstered with a two-speed transfer case for extremely demanding terrain.

Of course, it goes without saying these days that all the hardware on board doesn’t serve a useful purpose unless it’s supported up by great software and electronics. With that in mind, Ford bestowed the Expedition with the best-in-class electronics and safety systems. Indeed, in the cabin, you will be treated to a 12.4-inch driver’s information cluster along with a 15.5-inch vertical infotainment system with SYNC, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay as standard—pretty neat.  Furthermore, the Expedition receives the whole suite of driver assistance systems, including Road Edge Detection, Intersection Assist, Brake Assist, Evasive Steering Assist, and Active Road Dam. It’s also worth mentioning that the automaker also included its bespoke hands-free highway driver monitoring system (similar to Tesla’s Autopilot) with stop-go assist, lane centering, and speed sign recognition to ease up the driver’s strain.

Overall, the Expedition is so loaded with features that it makes for an all-around master—it won’t be cheap, though but more on that later.

Stay tuned for more!
