Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is a Monster PHEV with 831 HP

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the new AMG GT 63 S E Performance, its first performance hybrid model, sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds.

The super-fast four-door coupe features a front-mounted gas engine and an electric motor on the rear axle. The 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine produces 630 hp (470 kW), while the electric motor in the trunk produces an additional 201 hp (150 kW). The motor can drive the rear wheels directly or in tandem with the driven wheels for better acceleration.

Combined, the plug-in hybrid system produces 831 hp and between 745 and 1,084 lb-ft of torque, enough for a 0-62 mph sprint in 2.9 seconds, and 196 mph top speed, while keeping average fuel consumption at 20 mpg—not bad, right? However, it’s important to keep in mind that due to the crazy power output, the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door gets a very dismal 7 miles all-electric range.

Still, the e-motor draws energy from a 6.1-kWh battery, directly derived from Mercedes’ F1 team. The unit has a cooling mechanism that circulates water through microchannels around all the 560 cells. As a result, no matter how often the car is charged or discharged, it will always be at the proper working temperature of 45 degrees Celsius.

The GT 63 S E will have five driving modes, including a new electric mode that can cruise up to 81 mph [130 kmh] without burning a drop of gasoline. And to increase the range, a four-speed regenerative braking system kicks in when the gas pedal is left off, recharging the battery.

The car also comes with Mercedes‘s Dynamic Drive, AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with a new damping system, and a rear differential lock. Of course, drivers may also choose from different wheel styles, including new lightweight 20″ and 21″ combinations that are guaranteed to turn heads. The MBUX infotainment system, as well as the new two-spoke steering wheel with touch-based buttons, is also included here.

Unfortunately, the German automaker is yet to release the price of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE but we expect more details next week at the IAA Show in Munich, where Mercedes will unveil a pre-production version of the sleek four-door coupe.

Stay tuned!
