Fiat already has a winning formula with its New 500 all-electric city car and now wants to fully electrify its portfolio by 2030.
2030 seems a breakthrough year for EVs, with many major automakers announcing to go all-electric by then. The latest to announce full electrification by 2030 is Stellantis’ sub-brand Fiat. Its CEO Olivier François said that between 2025 and 2030, its entire product lineup will go electric-only.
The announcement was made during a conversation between François and Stefano Boeri at the “World Environment Day 2021.” Stefano Boeri, the founder of Stefano Boeri Architetti, is an architect and urban planner who has been working on urban forestation projects around the globe.
The duo discussed and analyzed new opportunities for an upcoming ‘New Renaissance,’ seeing the current scenario across the world and increasing concerns about environmental degradation. The exchange of values started a year ago when Fiat took inspiration from Boeri’s ‘Green’ architecture at several locations worldwide and turned into a Utopian City shown during commercials about Fiat’s current all-electric car—the New 500.
Both spokespeople talked about the urgency of taking action and grab the opportunity of inspiring change on the planet. François, while talking about the launch of the New 500, said, “The decision to launch the New 500—electric and electric alone—was actually taken before Covid-19. But, even then, we were already aware that the world could not take any more ‘compromises.’ In fact, the lockdown was only the latest of the warnings we have received.”
In other words, François described the global pandemic as a warning for environmental degradation and said that urgent actions are necessary for our planet, a perfect opportunity to showcase its iconic car— the 500.
In the 1950s, the 500 opened access to mobility for all. In the future, though, Fiat’s mission is to provide access to more sustainable mobility to all.
“It is our duty to bring to market electric cars that cost no more than those with an internal combustion engine, as soon as we can, in line with the falling costs of batteries,” said François.
The combination of Boeri’s architecture, such as the Bosco Verticale, which includes more than 27,000 plants and millions of leaves, and electric cars like the New 500 will surely help improve Italian cities’ air quality.
Their conversation on World Environment Day focused on building urban cities with more greenery and zero toxic car emissions. The main message promoted by the event was: #GenerationRestoration.
