Porsche tested its roof box at track speeds and focused on delivering better aerodynamics and less noise.
Got a lot of luggage? Can’t put a rooftop box on your car because these things drag at high speed and look quite frankly ugly? Then you might want to check Porsche’s new rooftop cargo box specifically designed for high-speed performance.
Namely, Porsche has developed a roof box with high-class aerodynamics especially engineered for high-speed rides. And about the looks? Well, again, it comes from Porsche, so it looks very streamlined.
The box has a carrying capacity of 17 cubic feet and 165 pounds, which Porsche defines as “can fit at least five pairs of skis or three snowboards.’
Along with the brand’s logo, the box comes in three different colors—Dolomite Silver Metallic, Carrara White Metallic, and Volcano Grey Metallic. Moreover, the box is fully customizable, and you can even match it to your car’s color! Just make sure to keep a couple of extra bucks ready.
Worth mentioning, even though the German manufacturer only showcased pics of its roof box installed on a couple of its own cars, you can get one even if you don’t drive a Porsche. Indeed, customers can mount the box over any standard rooftop bar via a quick-fastening system. Interestingly, the box can also be operated from either side of the vehicle for better accessibility—we have all used one of those Thule boxes that only opens from one side; Porsche’s will take care of that.
And if you plan on taking your car to the track, you’ll be happy to hear that Porsche has tested the roof cargo box in high-speed conditions, just as you would expect from the German automaker. Specifically, the company has proven the cargo box works at license-revoking speeds (per US norms). The focus was especially thrown at reducing drag force and high-wind noises as well as providing a greater handling and an overall quality experience.
Unfortunately, the price of that cool-looking roof box hasn’t been revealed yet, but coming from a brand like Porsche, it surely won’t come cheap. If you want to get your hands on one, Porsche said they would be available through the TEquipment program by the end of this month. So, if you’re going to carry those extra pairs of boots for your upcoming trip or simply want to bring a couple of beers more, don’t worry—Porsche has got you covered.
