The 2021 Hyundai Bayon looks attractive on the outside, packs advanced tech inside, and provides passengers with a spacious and well-appointed cabin.
The compact crossover/SUV segment is gaining high popularity across the globe. Several leading auto brands have put their specific offerings to appeal the small SUV lovers. Joining the competition, Hyundai makes a stylish entry into the segment with the Bayon. It is the smallest and most affordable vehicle in its SUV line-up and is specifically designed for the European market.
Angular and Sporty Styling
The name is inspired by ‘Bayonne,’ a city in Southeast France. It features aggressive styling and a sharp exterior with lots of triangular and edgy elements. Moreover, there’s a wide single-piece front grille surrounded by big air intakes on either side. In line with Hyundai’s recent models, thin split-LED daytime running lights sit at the end of the hood, and just below them are three-part triangular LED headlights.
At the rear, there are arrow-shaped LED taillights connected by a thin horizontal line. Meanwhile, the dynamic shoulder and the arrow-shaped C-pillar provide a bold look to the exterior’s side profile. Moreover, a rugged skid plate and black lower-body cladding complete the muscular appearance of the Bayon.
Spacious and Hi-Tech Interior
The Bayon SUV measures 4,180mm long, 1,775mm wide, and 1,490mm tall. The wheelbase stands at 2,580mm. It will be available with 15-inch steel wheels or 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels. Hyundai also promises a spacious cabin and a 411-liter cargo area, or 1,205-liters with the rear seats folded.
Inside, the Bayon is packed with advanced connectivity equipment. It features a 10.25-inch digital TFT instrument panel and an 8-inch infotainment system as standard, with an additional 10.25-inch touchscreen available as an option. Both displays have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support as standard. Other features include full-LED ambient lighting, Bose sound system, wireless phone mirroring, wireless charging pads, and more. The company offers three interior colors – Black, Dark-Light Gray, and Dark Gray.
Bayon’s standard safety and driver-assist features include lane-keeping assist, forward collision-avoidance assist, automatic emergency braking system, blindspot monitoring, driver attention warning system, and so on.
The Only Engine in the Bayon is a 1.0-liter Turbo Three-Cylinder
The Bayon SUV features the same engine as the new i20. It’s a 1.0-liter T-GDi three-cylinder petrol that generates 98hp and 127lb-ft (172Nm) of torque. There’s also an optional higher-powered variant of the same engine that produces 118bhp. A 48-volt mild-hybrid technology is available on both engines. The engine sends power to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed automatic DCT gearbox. Furthermore, there are three driving modes available – Eco, Normal, and Sport.
Scheduled to roll out in the UK in June, the new Bayon SUV will compete with segment rivals such as the Ford Puma, Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke, and others. However, it won’t be available in North America. Prices should start from £19000 in the UK.
