Polydrop’s trailer has an ultra-lightweight aerodynamic body, built-in solar cells, Li-ion batteries, a kitchenette, and an air conditioner.
EV driving range falls dramatically when you put some extra weight. With such a downside, towing a camper might prove troublesome as drivers have to stop at charging stations several times along the way.
Combustion car owners might not find this a major issue as there are many gas stations across, and refueling is quick. However, with an EV, the drop in range means you need to reach the next charging station, which may not be nearby. Besides, you’ll also spend a lot of time on the charging stations.
But here’s some good news for EV owners who want to disconnect from their everyday lives and experience off-grid living. Polydrop, a travel-trailer specialist based in Canada, has unveiled a new trailer specifically optimized for EV towing. Called the P17A, this unique trailer houses a lightweight aluminum frame and an aerodynamic underbody. Besides, there is a large tongue cover to reduce the vacuum between the car and trailer.
Furthermore, the P17A has all facilities required to sustain a comfortable off-grid living. The multiple solar panels on the trailer’s roof provide up to 260-watt of power, but buyers can also opt for a 520-watt setup.
Meanwhile, powering the Polydrop camper is a floor-mounted lithium-ion battery pack that comes in three configurations – 2.4kWh, 4.8kWh, and 12kWh. The company claims that the solar panels, paired with the 12kWH battery pack, can provide climate-controlled off-grid camping for six days. The owner can charge the battery fully using a 110-volt inlet charging port.
Polydrop’s battery pack runs the HVAC system, including a 5000BTU air conditioner, a ventilator, and a heater to keep the indoors cozy through all seasons. The interior also features a full battery-powered LED lighting setup and an optional Bluetooth speaker system.
There’s also an 8.7-inch of extra-thick insulation package for enhanced camping comfort and protection. Pay $1,850 more, and you get a complete battery-powered kitchenette with a 20-liter refrigerator and a 1300-watt induction stove. All electric appliances draw power from a Pure Sine Wave Inverter.
Moreover, the design and layout of the Polydrop P17A are minimal. The exterior looks sharp and edgy and is beautifully crafted from clear-anodized aluminum. Notably, two Gullwing-style doors open upwards, enabling entry inside the trailer.
Meanwhile, the new open galley allows kitchenette access from the inside. Other interior fittings include a small closet with a garment rack, 2 USB charging points, a full-size mattress, and more. The trailer weighs 1,200-lb and is 6-ft wide and 13.7-ft long.
When Polydrop tested the P17A trailer with a 2018 Tesla Model 3, the EV could achieve a driving range of 245-miles compared to the standard 310-mile range, roughly a 20% decrease.
The price of the P17A starts at $24,990 for the standard 2.4 kW battery pack and 260-watt solar charging, reaching up to $33,790 for the 12 kW battery pack and 520-watt solar panels. The optional Bluetooth speaker system adds another $500 to the total price.
