The Mustang Mach-E sits even closer to the ground than a 2014 Subaru STI!
Ever wondered why Ford’s Mustang Mach-E drives like a car? The answer might be simpler than you think — it has more of a car stance than an SUV’s. The standard Mach-E has a ground clearance of 5.7 inches, while the high-performance variant, the Mach-E GT, is even lower, sitting only 5.3 inches from the pavement.
For comparison, its more traditional namesake, the Mustang GT, also has a ground clearance of 5.7 inches. To put things in perspective, the V8 two-door sports car boasts a higher ground clearance than the Mach-E GT, thus questioning the EV’s SUV moniker.
Further comparisons with other SUVs in the same segment like the Ford Edge also point out the Mach-E’s incredibly low ground clearance. For instance, a standard Edge has a whopping 8.0 inches of ground clearance while the performance-based Edge ST sits even higher at 8.2 inches, making it ideal for off-roading. On the other hand, the new Mach-E GT’s ground clearance is comparable to the likes of the Ford Focus, a compact family car.
Despite its low ground clearance facing criticisms from automotive experts worldwide, Ford claims the high seating position is still there. Moreover, Ford says that the vehicle’s big battery sits really low, bringing the center of gravity closer to the ground, thereby improving maneuverability. The manufacturer also stresses the advanced suspension system providing optimum ride comfort without sacrificing handling.
Coming to other essential aspects of this battery-powered SUV, the Mach-E packs in decent cargo space. With 29.0 cubic feet behind the second row or 59.6 cubes with the seats folded down, the SUV has enough space to pack all your essentials. Interestingly enough, since the vehicle has no ICE engine, it also comes with a frunk boasting another 4.8 cubic feet of storage space.
With that being said, the brand new Mach-E is one of the most highly anticipated vehicles of the year. And bearing the Mustang badge, it is sure to cause a stir in the automotive world.
The only thing left to decide here is whether the term “SUV” actually refers to how high a vehicle sits or how ample the cargo space is.
