A Swiss startup with a legendary automotive name is set to shake up the electric sports car market with its new 1,000 HP GT concept.
Piëch Automotive is taking another shot at creating a luxury electric sports car with its new GT concept. This Swiss startup, founded by Anton Piëch, son of the late Volkswagen Group boss Ferdinand Piëch, has been working on this project for over five years. Despite some challenges, Piëch Automotive is determined to make a name for itself in the automotive world.
The GT concept, which was first introduced as the Mark Zero at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, has undergone significant changes. The latest version of the car features a sharper design and a much more powerful powertrain. While it’s still in the clay model stage, the GT concept has some impressive specs that make it worth watching.
The new GT retains its sleek, grand tourer shape but now boasts more defined lines and a bolder character. The front fascia with razor-thin headlights, the sloping roofline, and the angular rear give it a sporty and elegant look. Although the interior details are still under wraps, the car will feature a 2+2 seating layout and offer extensive color and trim options, ensuring no two cars are exactly the same.
Under the hood, the GT is powered by two electric motors, one in the front and one in the rear, providing all-wheel drive. Each motor produces 503 horsepower and 406 ft-lbs of torque, resulting in a combined output of over 1,000 horsepower and 800 ft-lbs of torque. This setup allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 187 mph. The powertrain is supported by a 90-kWh battery pack, giving the car a range of 312 miles based on the WLTP testing cycle.
One of the unique features of the GT is its two-speed gearbox, designed to enhance driving engagement and excitement. This, combined with independent wheel control, promises a dynamic driving experience that stands out in the electric sports car market.
To bring this ambitious project to life, Piëch Automotive has teamed up with Tobias Moers, former head of Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin, and Canada’s Multimatic, known for building the Ford GT. The plan is to start production in 2028, with an initial run of 2,000 units. The GT is expected to be priced around $200,000.
The road to production is still long and filled with challenges, but Piëch Automotive is confident in its vision. The company is seeking additional funding from various sources, including investors in the Middle East, to make this project a reality. If successful, the GT could be a game-changer in the electric sports car market, offering high performance, distinctive design, and customizable options for discerning buyers.
