2025 Volkswagen ID.7 Is Here to Bring Tesla Down

Finally, there’s a German-made EV worth rivaling the Tesla Model S, promising a range of up to 435 miles.

After teasing us with a few concept cars for a while, VW finally debuts a production model, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7. The electric mid-size sedan will hit the European and Chinese markets in the fall of 2023, followed by North America in 2024.

The German automaker has set the bar high with its first premium EV. From its high-tech and practical interior to its strikingly modern exterior, the ID.7 exudes elegance from every angle. Clearly, the carmaker has ambitious plans to dominate the electrified market, and this EV indicates its strong commitment to achieving that.

The ID.7 is built on VW’s revolutionary MEB platform, tuned with performance and sustainability in mind. It will be available in two trims, with the Pro model bringing a powerful 77 kWh battery, 382 miles of range, and up to 170 kW of fast-charging capacity. But for those demanding more, the range-topping Pro S will feature an 86 kWh battery, a range of up to 435 miles — the highest range ever offered by the brand yet — and 200 kW charging support.

Both variants will be powered by an APP550 single-motor, good for 282 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, a powertrain developed in collaboration with the Volkswagen Component Group in Kassel, designed to provide highly responsive acceleration and performance equivalent to other mid-size luxury sedans.

Interestingly, the ID.7’s size is highly comparable to a Tesla Model S; hence you can expect the same kind of practicality. But design-wise, it looks a bit better if you ask me, with much smoother and more aerodynamic lines than Musk’s model.

Inside, the cabin looks just as clean and minimalist, with tech bits seamlessly integrated for better convenience. Notably, the head-up augmented reality display projects crucial information directly in the driver’s line of sight, keeping the driver’s eyes on the road at all times. Moreover, a massive 15-inch infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, providing drivers with control over all aspects of the vehicle’s functionality in only one place.

Better yet, the panoramic sunroof is also part of Volkswagen’s innovative breakthrough. It has a customization feature where users may adjust how much light enters the car using the “dim” or “transparent” mode by pressing a button or voice commands.

With the ID.7, VW clearly aims to provide customers with a decent Tesla Model S or Lucid Air alternative, especially for those who care more about range and practicality than raw power. And while pricing is still unknown, many estimates it might start under $50,000 — not bad for a mid-size posh sedan. That said, we’ll update you once we hear more about VW’s upcoming Tesla killer.
