Toyota reveals its 2024 Crown lineup with plug-in hybrid and hydrogen powertrains.
Toyota just released the details for three additional models of the Crown lineup, confirming four body styles — Crown, Crown Estate, Crown Sport, and Crown Sedan. These models actually debuted back in 2022, with the normal “Crown” variant being the first available model. However, the manufacturer had kept shut about the three upcoming models; until now.
Before getting into the details, let’s take a minute to understand the Crown’s slightly confusing naming scheme. For starters, the “normal” Crown is a mix between a crossover and a sedan, while the Sport is somehow the SUV counterpart, looking quite similar to the Estate – yes, the Estate model is pretty much an SUV. And last, the Sedan is a normal four-door sedan with normal styling cues.
That said, the Sedan will offer hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, while other trims will receive a hybrid and plug-in hybrid system instead. It’s safe to assume the hybrid Crowns will adopt the same power units as the existing one — a 2.5-liter inline-4 with three electric motors or a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4 with one electric motor producing between 236hp and 340 hp while simultaneously achieving great MPGs. Meanwhile, the Crown Sedan might get the same hydrogen powertrain as the Mirai, currently producing 182 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. And as for the PHEV models, details should be announced soon during the official debut.
Overall, we’re quite fans of the Crown’s premium look — so much so that we wouldn’t blame you if you mistook them as a Lexus. And while Toyota hasn’t said much about the cabins, it’ll most likely share the same luxurious cockpit as the existing Crown; nothing bad to report so far.
The new Crown will debut in autumn 2023 for the Sedan and Sport Hybrid, winter 2023 for the Sport PHEV, and next year for the Estate models. Toyota claims these TNGA Crowns will be sold in 40 different countries and regions; unfortunately, there’s no confirmation yet about these new models coming to the US.
More details are expected closer to the launch.
