2023 VW Amarok Packs Up to 298 HP to Take on the Ford Ranger

The 2023 Amarok is largely a Ford Ranger underneath, though it has some unique Volkswagen traits, like the TDI diesel engines.

After a series of leaked images and continuous teasing over the last few months, Volkswagen has finally decided to end the suspense and released its latest midsize truck, the 2023 Amarok.

Although the 2023 Amarok is based on the Ford Ranger T6.2 platform, VW has made considerable efforts to differentiate it and give its customers a unique experience. Notably, it took four years for the Amarok to reach production, of which VW spent three for the design process.

An X-shape front bumper, LED matrix headlights, C-shaped tail lights, and the ‘AMAROK’ stamp on the tailgate are some key highlights of the truck’s exterior look.

“For the new generation, we have significantly modified the Amarok’s archetypal design. It is now unambiguously more expressive and even more impressive,” stated Albert Kirzinger (Head of Design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles).

Furthermore, the latest VW stretches 210.6 inches in the double-cab form, 3.8 inches longer than the previous model. Not only is the 2023 Amarok bigger than the outgoing model, but it also features a longer 128.7-inch wheelbase for larger cabin space, especially in the rear seats. Also, the overhangs are shorter, ensuring higher approach and departure angles for better drivability on challenging off-road terrains.

Come inside the vehicle, and you’ll see screens, big screens! First is the 10- or -12-inch infotainment system, depending on the trim level. Unsurprisingly, the screen is vertical, like on the 2023 Ranger, and unlike other VW models. It just goes to show that the new 2023 Amarok is a Ford through-and-through. Meanwhile, the instrument cluster is an 8-inch digital for the base model and 12 inches for the upper trims.

Moreover, over 20 driver-assistance systems are supported by a slightly modified Ford’s SYNC 4 operating system (same story here). Finally, a Harman Kardon sound setup ensures a grooving experience in the cabin.

The 2023 Amarok will be available with four diesel and one gasoline engine. Naturally, VW prioritized torque, and as a result, every powertrain is turbocharged. In Africa, an entry-level Amarok constitutes a 2.0-liter diesel producing 148 HP, whereas other countries acquire a 168 HP version of the same engine. However, buyers can opt for the bi-turbo 206 HP version too. Lastly, the top-end diesel option is a 3.0-liter V6 making 238 HP or 247 HP, depending on where it is sold.

The lone gasoline model is a Ford-sourced 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost providing 298 HP. Meanwhile, all models making more than 200 HP come with a 10-speed auto, though a five/six-speed manual or six-speed auto option. Depending on the market, selectable or permanent “4-Motion” all-wheel drive options are available.

So, you might wonder how all these stats transfer to practical activities? Firstly, the 2023 Amarok has a 7,716 lbs (3,500 kg) towing capacity with a maximum payload of 2,557 lbs (1,160 kg). Moreover, your cargo remains safe from external contaminants thanks to the electrically operated roll cover coming as standard. Lastly, an optional four-person roof tent is available as an official accessory and holds up to 772 lbs (350 kg) of static load. Other optional accessories include a hardtop cover, bull bar, and a snorkel.

Furthermore, the 2023 Amarok will offer six driving modes for on-road and off-road driving. It will also be available in five trim levels — the entry-level Amarok, off-road-focused Life, Style, PanAmericana, and the road-biased Aventura.

Unfortunately, VW hasn’t confirmed a North American launch for the 2023 Amarok and is still judging interest. Still, a ray of hope is that the company’s US division recently trademarked the Amarok name, so who knows!

  1. I would prefer VW drive trains. The Ford 10 speed auto gearbox I don`t trust at all ( my personal experience Ranger bi-turbo, 19 600km. 11 months old). I bought a new Amarok. Will never buy a Ranger again. And not an Amarok because of the new drive train from Ford.
