Rest assured, the “EV” in Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV doesn’t mean it’s electric!
Unlike what you might have expected, the GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV is not another pickup jumping on the EV bandwagon. Instead, it’s an updated version of the already rugged Sierra AT4X, called the American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Edition, and it’s as gas-guzzling as it gets. You might have heard the terminology before since the latest trim in the Sierra lineup adds to the Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison, also credited to the AEV family.
The new Sierra AT4X AEV debuted at the Overland Expo Pacific Northwest, at which GMC Global Vice President Duncan Aldred said, “GMC has been a pioneer in the premium off-road space, and this Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition raises the bar yet again.” He went on to assure an “uncompromising combination of on-road technology and off-road capability by leveraging GMC’s unwavering dedication to providing premium trucks and American Expedition Vehicles’ expertise in engineering and integrating performance-driven parts and accessories.”
To achieve what the manufacturer claims to be the “most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever,” GMC started by including new heavy-duty front and rear bumpers with recovery points, and the refreshed front fascia is now compatible with a winch. Meanwhile, five skid plates safeguard the front approach, steering gear, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential against rocks and flying objects. Other safety features include off-road rocker panel protectors and optional bolt-on step assist. Upgraded 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires are wrapped around laser-engraved 18-inch AEV Salta wheels finished in gloss black.
Unsurprisingly, AEV’s signature recessed valve system ensures additional protection from rocks during off-roading activities, and the exclusive AEV branding on the bumpers, embroidered headrests, and all-weather floor liners are a nice touch. Lastly, minute design changes in the AEV, including gloss black door handles and a black contrast inner tailgate, complete the bad-boy look we all want with such a bad-ass truck.
As a result of the updates, the approach angle is now increased to 32.5 degrees compared to the regular AT4X’s 25.5 degrees, while the departure angle is also pushed from 23 to 23.4 degrees. These upgrades are further enriched with a whopping 11.2 inches of ground clearance to ensure smooth drivability on challenging terrains. However, the max payload of 1,290 pounds and max trailering of 8,700 pounds is the same, whether you choose the regular Sierra 1500 AT4X or the new AEV edition.
Under the hood, you’ll get the standard 6.2-liter V8 engine making 420 HP and 460 lb-ft of torque — it simply didn’t really need an upgrade here. However, the interior is now quite different, sporting an Obsidian Rush color scheme, grain-leather massaging and heated front seats, Vanta ash wood trim, and an upscale 12-speaker Bose audio system for a truly luxurious experience (being 20 miles off the beaten path doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still be comfortable, right?).
Interestingly, all of these AEV goodies coupled with the Sierra’s already formidable performance might just give it the means to surpass the Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison — some might disagree, but you know. Overall, the truck promises impressive off-road capabilities while providing the driver with superior technology and better comfort than any other pickup truck, which is not a small claim for sure.
Unfortunately, GMC hasn’t disclosed a possible pricing range yet, but we expect more details closer to the official launch. We’ll keep you posted!
