The Korean company has been transforming its design language lately, and the all-new 2022 Hyundai Tucson perfectly embodies that.
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson was finally unveiled in the US market, along with complete technical details. Hyundai’s upcoming SUV employs a host of improvements throughout and will go on sale next spring.
Like most models in its category, the 2022 Tucson grew significantly. Overall length has grown by 6.1 inches and now measures 181.3 inches. Moreover, the wheelbase has increased by 3.4 inches to 108.3 inches in total. According to the carmaker, the new size creates more room for cargo and more legroom for people.
Interestingly, the new Tucson looks to be the same size as the RAV4 and the C-RV. However, it has a longer wheelbase and roomier interior. On the other hand, the Nissan Rogue is longer but has a 2-inches shorter wheelbase. The Tucson’s longer wheelbase should allow it to claim a better stance and maneuvrability.
Hyundai’s designers also dramatically improved the styling to get it in line with its new “Sensuous Sportiness” design language. And surprisingly, it fits quite well. The 2022 Tucson now looks more rugged and elegant at the same time. An intricate grille, bulging fenders, a flat roofline, and a chrome plate that stretches over the roof are part of the vehicle’s aggressive design. Besides, the new lines create better airflow around the body.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Tucson’s interior also comes with a new infotainment system. Now, the standard touchscreen measures 8 inches, with a possible upgrade to a 10.3-inch unit. The instrument cluster looks quite modern; however, it’s hoodless and risks the presence of glares.
We can’t argue about the new materials, though. The cabin looks much more luxurious and comfortable than before.
The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is available with three powertrain options. The base version has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder producing 187 HP and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed auto. There is also an option for all-wheel drive with a Sport mode that sends more torque to the rear wheels.
Those seeking better fuel economy might go for the 2022 Tucson Hybrid. The green model employs a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a single electric motor, providing 226 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid pairs exclusively with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Thanks to the added power, the hybrid is much quicker while also being 30% more fuel-efficient. Hyundai promises 500-miles of range with a full tank of gas.
There is another hybrid version, though, this time with plug-in capability. Unlike the regular hybrid, this model has a larger 13.8-kWh battery and can drive on electricity alone for longer.
Hyundai says the 2022 Tucson Hybrid PHEV can travel 28 miles on full-electric mode with a full charge. That being said, that’s less than its closest competitor, the Toyota RAV4 Prime, which can go 42 miles on electricity alone. The 2-hour recharge time is quite competitive, though.
Hyundai has incorporated some new technologies to provide a better driving experience too. Digital Key and Smart Park are new features that ensure Tucson owners feel like owning a modern SUV.
The 2022 Tucson will hit the road around spring 2021. The gas model and standard hybrid will go on sale first, with the plug-in hybrid available by summer 2021.
