2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Goes Plug-In Hybrid, Runs 25-miles on Battery Alone

Jeep has finally revealed all details regarding its 2021 Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid, capable of running up to 25 miles exclusively on pure electric power.

The Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe went on sale in the summer, and now the Wrangler 4xe is all set to join the rest of the lineup. However, of the three, only the Wrangler 4xe will be sold in America.

The upcoming Wrangler will feature an advanced turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder combustion engine, operating in combination with two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack of 17kWh. The total output produced is about 350 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, but as expected, the Wrangler 4xe only comes with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.

As of now, the company will offer three different variants of the car: the 4xe, the Sahara 4xe, and the Rubicon 4xe.

The 4xe and the Sahara 4xe come with a standard 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, a Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case, as well as front and rear Dana 44 axles. Pn the other hand, the Rubicon 4xe features a Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a 4:1 gear ratio, a crawl ratio of 77.2:1, and Tru-Lok electric front and rear-axle lockers.

Besides, all the models mentioned above come with Selec-Speed control with Hill descent and ascent control along with 30 inches of water fording capacity. Of course, all of the variants come with a ‘Trail Rated’ badge, meaning front and rear tow hooks and skid plates.

One of the biggest advantages of this Wrangler hybrid version is that the 4×4 drivetrain receives instant torque from its electric motors, unlike conventional internal combustion engines. And, thanks to the Trak-Lok limited-slip differential,  the Wrangler has a better grip than ever in low-traction driving conditions like sand and snow.

If compared across its different variants, the V6-powered Wrangler produces 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0 turbo four makes 270 hp and a combined torque of 295 lb-ft. On the other hand, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel provides fewer hp but a lot more torque with its 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.

Even better, the 4xe can even drive up to 25 miles only on pure electric power, resulting in a relatively reasonable 50 MPGe efficiency. You might think that 25 miles is not that much, but think about it for a minute. Most people don’t drive over 25 miles for daily commutes. And if you do, keep in mind that most of your trips to the corner store, grocery, or shopping mall will literally cost no gas at all — unless you shop 50 miles away from your home, but I doubt most people do that.

The Rubicon 4xe is available in ten different colors with 17″ off-road wheels and 33″ tires. However, the other two variants feature 20-inch wheels.

All three models will have a distinctive electric blue coloring on the front tow hooks. The blue shade is also present on the Rubicon name on the hood and the Jeep and Trail Rated badges. To pair with the exterior, the interior also comes with matching electric blue stitching along with a couple of other options.

The Jeep Wrangler has always been a favorite, and with a new high-performance hybrid variant, the automaker indeed aims to win over even more hearts in the near future.
