The 2021 BMW M4 might pack an even meaner punch than expected.
IND Distribution’s BMW 3.0-liter inline-six twin-turbo engine clocked 464.92 HP and 408.55 lb-ft of torque on the dyno. Although these figures don’t seem higher than the official rating, they don’t account for the drivetrain losses. Typically, a 15% drivetrain loss is usual in dyno tests, so IND Distribution estimates 547 HP and 480 lb-ft of torque. If the numbers are correct, that would be 74 HP more than advertised and 44 HP more than the Competition.
Although the 15% rule is debatable, the power difference is still significant. The M4 used by IND Distribution is still new, and more miles on the odometer could churn out even more power than that. However, dyno results always vary depending on many factors. Nevertheless, this first test shows that BMW might have understated its engine’s performance.
We might see the engine’s full potential in the next BMW M4 CSL, coming out in 2022. That model would probably be rated at around 520-530 HP, but the actual figure might be closer to 600 HP. BMW also plans an M4 Convertible for this summer, which will carry the same underpowered-on-paper engine. Regardless, it’s good to know that you’re always getting more than you pay for when buying a BMW.
