Toyota Launches Yaris Cross in Japan, a Year Before Anywhere Else

Toyota has launched its Yaris Cross to Japanese customers, and it’s been available for sale in Japan since August 31st and will be launched in Europe or elsewhere only in 2021.

The new Yaris Cross is based on the TNGA platform (GA-B) and offers two powertrain options. The base model is equipped with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine producing 118 HP at 6,600 RPM and 107 lb-ft of torque. It also comes with a Direct Shift-CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) available with either a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive powertrain.

However, the Yaris Cross hybrid is loaded with a 1.5-liter petrol engine and a small electric motor powered by a battery. The Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) delivers a power output of 91 90 HP and produces 88.5 lb-ft of torque.

The electric motor also produces its fair share of power and torque, delivering 79 HP and 104 lb-ft of torque. The Four Wheel Drive hybrid also comes with an impressive mileage of 30.8 km/l or 72.4 mpg in the WLTC cycle.

As far as the luggage space is concerned, Toyota has got you covered. The gas-powered 2 Wheel Drive Yaris Cross offers a luggage capacity of 390 liters (13.8 cu ft). Furthermore, the car can be made more spacious as the rear seat splits in a 40/20/40 ratio and has a 60/40 height-adjustable boot floor, quite impressive for a compact SUV.

Furthermore, Toyota is also offering a wide array of new and exciting features on all models. They all come equipped with a TFT color LCD Multi-Information Display and Data Communication Module. Multimedia features include a Smart Device Link(SDL), Apple Car Play, Android Auto Connectivity, and a Display Audio(DA).

With all these advanced safety and media features, the models are decently priced. The base model with the Dynamic Force Engine and front-wheel drive is priced at 1,798,000 yen ($17,000) while the more advanced Z E-Four hybrid has a price tag of $26,600. The Yaris Cross is available for sale from August 31st at the Japanese Domestic Market.
