Genesis enters the EV race with a stylish Electrified G80 electric luxury sedan with a 310-mile range and 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds.
The Electrified G80 made its debut in the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, although, at least on the outside, it’s hard to notice the differences with the combustion model. There are a few subtle changes, but the inside is what matters here.
The cabin of the new Electrified G80 features the world’s first noise-reduction system, called “Active Noise Control-Road,” to ensure the cabin is as quiet as possible. The system works by analyzing the noise frequency level outside the car and neutralizing it by sending back opposite sound frequencies.
Meanwhile, the cabin also features many recycled materials for the upholstery and seats like natural dies, recycled wood trims, and environmentally friendly fabrics.
“The Electrified G80, the perfect balance of athleticism and elegance, marks the beginning of our journey into the EV market, representing Genesis in the era of electrification”, said Jay Chang, global head of Genesis.
Exterior changes include a new aerodynamically enhanced front crest grille—or what looks like a grille since it has no openings. Regardless, the new grille features an inverted G-matrix pattern representing the company’s aim towards sustainable development and a charging port on the top right corner of the grille.
Genesis didn’t specify the battery size, although it said it would support ultra-fast 350-kWh charging. Besides, the Electrified G80 supports both 400V and 800V charging. According to Genesis, with a 350-kWh charger, the sedan can charge from 10% to 80% in only 22 minutes.
The Electrified G80 can also reach 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds, which is quick enough for a sedan of this size. Genesis says it will run up to 310-miles on a single charge, based on the Chinese NEDC standard or 265-miles on the Korean standard. The latter is closer to the EPA standard widely used in North America.
Another notable aspect is the V2L (vehicle to load) capability, which we already saw in the Ioniq 5. It allows the owner to power any electrical appliance under 3.6 kW (which is already higher than any average household electrical appliance) using electricity from the vehicle’s battery.
The Electrified G80 looks like a direct competitor to the newly-announced Mercedes-Benz EQS. However, to compete with the German, it would definitely need a better range. Still, Genesis could mitigate that with a lower price.
Genesis said it would share more information about the Electrified G80 availability in the US and Canada later this year. Stay tuned!
