Europeans will start getting Chinese-made Model 3’s before production shifts to Germany.
As per Autonews Europe, a Tesla spokesperson declined to comment on the rumor. However, according to individuals familiar with the brand, Tesla looks forward to exporting Model 3 vehicles in Europe. They might even do that for other markets, including Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand, basically all right-hand-drive countries.
Moreover, these countries started to adopt EVs on a vast scale, significantly increasing the demand for electric vehicles, thanks to climate change awareness.
Meanwhile, Tesla might need to ramp up production of its Model 3 shortly. The American carmaker has fierce competition in China from BYD and NIO, and in Europe from VW Group, PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel), and Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance, and BMW. Currently, Tesla produces around 11,000 units per month in its Shanghai factory.
Tesla’s largest plant is currently in Fremont, California, where it produces Model X, Model S, Model 3, and Model Y. To supply to the increasing demand, Elon Musk is already building another Gigafactory near Berlin, where Tesla is expected to start producing vehicles by mid-2021.
The latest developments will undoubtedly help Musk’s vision of producing more affordable vehicles. Building vehicles closer to the target markets significantly lowers costs, while also increasing the profit margin for the company. Moreover, new plants will help Tesla become a true global carmaker, with presence across most continents.
