Need a budget alternative to a Singer? Theon Design has got you covered.
The restomod market is undoubtedly booming, with nostalgic tuners restoring classic cars to their former glory. Joining the action is British tuning house Theon Design with its GRB002 based on a 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera 2 now equipped with the usual mods you’d find in a restomod rule book. Still, a revived classic 911 is always a pleasant sight.
Theon Design started by stripping the Carrera to its bare metal frame and strengthening the chassis. Then, build a classic 911 body using carbon fiber body instead of old steel, and you’ve got yourself a GRB002 that’s 441 lbs lighter than the original! Not bad, for a start, right?
The body was then painted in a classic yet gorgeous Oak Green Metallic, topped off with dark ghost tripes. We appreciate that Theon chose to preserve the Carrera’s original look instead of going for yet another (blasphemous) widebody kit — no offense to RWB fans, though. Satin chrome titbits and chic 18-inch Fuchs-style alloy wheels with fresh RS brakes were added to round up the exterior.
But what makes this restomod special is the air-cooled engine naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine with a new ignition system and bespoke throttle bodies, producing 406 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque! All that power is then sent to the rear axle through a Hewland six-speed manual gearbox and a Wavetrac Torsen limited-slip differential. And to ensure all that power stays on the road and everybody ears you coming, Theon installed five-stage active dampers from TracTive, and a Zircotec ceramic-coated valved exhaust system.
If that’s not music to your ears, you are not on the right page.
Inside the cabin, Theon also ensured everything was top-notch. The Carrera’s ‘touch points,’ including the interior’s door handle, gauge cluster, gear knob, and hood pull, have been upgraded with billet aluminum accents. The stock steering wheel was replaced with a Nardi Deep Dish model, and Recaro CS seats finished in white Muslin leather and green insides now take care of the driver. And of course, there’s woven Alcantara everywhere and an upgraded sound system, too — not that it was really needed.
Put simply, there is a new cowboy in town, and Singer has serious competition. Luckily, Theon Design’s founder, Adam Hawley, says it has a completely different approach while making its vehicle. He also points out the immense price difference between the GRB002, which starts from $470,000, and Singer’s million-dollar price tag.
Fair enough, let’s call this one a budget Singer, then!
