Gunther Werks Has Done It Again — Touring Turbo Edition Coupe Debuts with a 750HP Air-Cooled Flat-Six

Revealed at The Quail during Monterey Car Week, this Porsche restomod proves you don’t have to be electrified to stand out.

Not long ago, Gunther Werks announced its first right-hand-drive restored and modified Porsche 993 named the “Bubblegum,” a pure work of art. But with the Monterey Car Week happening this month, the Californian-based Porsche tuning specialist has another surprise for us, a limited-edition classic 911 restomod called Turbo Touring Edition

Based on the Project Tornado, the vintage sportster features little to no cosmetic and mechanical upgrades. Sure, there’s a new ducktail spoiler inspired by the 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, but that’s probably the only noticeable difference from the original. Interestingly, the new wing not only adds more downforce but also helps feed cold air to the air-cooled flat-six engine, resulting in better overall performance.

Even better, this new spoiler is a plug-and-play option, so you can add it on top of the standard wing. It even comes with a dedicated carrying case, showing how modular it is – perfect for those who want a different look on their restored classic. But honestly, the wing is less of a looker compared to the carbon fiber bodywork Gunther has done here. Other than making the car look sick, it also helps with keeping the weight under 3,000 lbs.

Unsurprisingly, the carbon theme continues inside, accompanied by aluminum bits and Alcantara. But the whole cockpit layout is retained from the original — and that’s perfect!

Gunther focuses more on what’s under the hood, so no need to say that the engine is nothing short of a masterpiece. It’s essentially the same twin-turbocharged flat-fan air-cooled flat-six found in its other restomod projects, but this one makes at least 750 horsepower — and that’s without all the fancy electric motor aid other show cars at The Quail have.

As usual, the tuner tends to keep the pricing a secret. Though, assuming there’ll only be 75 examples made, a six-figure price tag is probably a safe bet. While it wouldn’t be a value buy, nothing is ever too expensive for a Porsche purist with deep pockets, right?
