Tesla Offers New Entry-Level Model Y With Next-Gen Batteries For Under $50,000

Tesla’s “cheapest” SUV now comes with 4680 battery cells and a more affordable price tag, making it a potential top pick for EV enthusiasts.

Tesla just unveiled a new entry-level variant of the Model Y, equipped with its latest 4680 cells battery tech. And the cherry on top? This sleek offering is now cheaper than ever, starting at $49,990 — roughly $2,000 less than the previous base model. Not to mention you’ll still be eligible for the $7,500 EV tax credit, lowering the price even further.

Moreover, the 4680 batteries provide a larger capacity and longer life than the old 2170 cells used in the Standard Range variant. This technology speeds up the charging process by a whopping 50%, saving users plenty of time. Tesla also claims the AWD Model Y can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 mph — not bad.

That said, there’s no improvement to the relatively short 279-mile range, though.

Moreover, the brand seems to have taken another big step towards democratizing EVs by significantly reducing the prices of almost all its vehicles, even offering a discount of up to 20% at the beginning of the year. Sure, this might have been a strategy aimed at maintaining its position as the leader in the electric market, but still…

CEO Elon Musk understands pricing can often deter those who yearn to experience the magic of its vehicle. As he said at Tesla’s investor day, “The desire for people to own a Tesla is extremely high. The limiting factor is their ability to pay for a Tesla.”

With that in mind, the EV maker has made it a mission to ensure its vehicles are accessible to as many people as possible, a move that could potentially revolutionize the EV market and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

Also, it’s no secret the automotive industry is undergoing electrification, and the competition is heating up. Tesla’s decision to reduce prices is a strategic move aimed at staying ahead of the game, as traditional automotive giants like Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW are already entering the electrified market. Not to forget, emerging players such as Rivian, Lucid, BYD, and Nio also have innovative offerings.

That said, there’s no denying Tesla remains the top dog in the EV market at the moment, and appointing the newly improved Model Y as its most affordable electric SUV is spot on.

The new Model Y is available for order now, and delivery is scheduled from April to May 2023, coming straight from Giga Texas.
