Calling it a “second-generation” model is quite a stretch, but the updated VW ID.3 does boast many styling changes and other upgrades.
The 2024 Volkswagen ID.3 is here. Dubbed a “second-generation” model by the German automaker, it’s actually more of a subtle refresh to the original. Along with the refreshed style, the electric hatchback has also undergone software renewal and some interior upgrades. Though it’s only been two-and-a-half years since the model’s debut, the updated bits are quite welcomed.
With much to unpack, let’s start with the styling upgrades. Indeed, the exterior refresh isn’t extreme, and the hatchback is still recognizable; it even retains its previous measurements. But we’ll take the new bumper and aero-optimized wheels as they contribute to the EV’s clean and friendly look. Not to mention the new Dark Olivine Green color scheme shown at the press looks pretty exquisite, especially when contrasted by the black roof and silver trim.
Going inside, the changes are as subtle as the outside, retaining most of its predecessor’s visuals. But VW has worked on including a higher-quality sustainable material called Artvelours Eco that contains 71% recyclate. It’s essentially a more eco-friendly microfiber material used in often-touched surfaces, like the remodeled door trims and seat covers. In addition, by listening to customers’ feedback, VW is finally expanding the use of soft, foam-like material on the cockpit to boost its premium feel.
As for the driver’s displays, VW seems to apply the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” policy. Thus it brought over the standard 12-inch infotainment system and a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster from the previous car but updated with the latest software generation. Moreover, this combo can be paired with an optional augmented reality head-up display, so users can experience dynamic navigation instructions projected 10 meters ahead.
Last but not least, a 58 or 77-kWh lithium-ion battery pack powers up the hatchback — the first one gives a range of 265 miles, while the latter offers 339 miles on a single charge. The rear-mounted electric motor produces 201 hp power and 229 lb-ft torque. While none of these numbers are class-leading, they’re sufficient to make the ID.3 an attractive daily driver.
Unfortunately, although European customers can start ordering the latest ID.3 in the fourth quarter of this year, there’s still no sign of the cute hatchback coming to the US. But to whoever plans to buy this EV, beware of VW’s announcement about a potential lower-budget version with a smaller battery.
