Volkswagen Amarok Pickup Truck Teased with a Potent V6 TDI Engine

Volkswagen teased the all-new Amarok pickup truck with a few official sketches, showing muscular proportions and “dynamic, self-assured styling.”

The new Amarok will share the platform with the recently announced Ford Ranger, though you won’t notice that from the design. VW made sure that its pickup truck follows the brand’s design principles, though the clean and minimalistic lines of the current models are gone.

Instead, the new truck has slim headlights and a bar that runs between them. Moreover, the Amarok features an X-shape silver section that gives it a more purposeful appearance and the ubiquitous wide air intakes. Meanwhile, the back features C-shaped taillights and “Amarok” lettering.

“We emphasize the different, expressive front designs of our pickup with a charismatic Amarok signature that is also found with very large letters on the cargo box at the rear and is sported very proudly by the Amarok,” said Albert-Johann Kirzinger, head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The next-gen Amarok will be 3.9 inches longer than the current model, in line with the Ford Ranger. Moreover, VW will focus on better off-road abilities by employing higher road clearance and suspension upgrades. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the German brand differentiates itself from Ford’s offering or whether it will only re-use the same underbody parts.

VW also revealed one sketch of the interior, showing a tough-looking cabin. The center console also has a large screen, though it keeps several physical buttons, as an all-display approach in a pickup truck wouldn’t work.

The company has already confirmed that the next-gen Amarok will feature its in-house V6 TDI diesel engine, promising loads of low-down torque. However, the truck could also be available with a turbocharged inline-4 (TSI) engine depending on the market.

Volkswagen will debut its new mid-size truck by the end of the year, though sadly, it doesn’t plan a US launch. Still, at least we’ll get the 392-HP Ford Ranger Raptor!
