The BMW M7 will probably be a halo 7 Series that would send the ICE model in history, but details about the M9 supercar are far more scarce.
Although the automotive landscape slowly shifts towards electricity, carmakers still plan powerful sportscars, supercars, and even hypercars. The latest brand to surprise with a performance combustion vehicle is BMW. Indeed, the German automaker is lining up to offer something super fast and gas-guzzling.
Automotive website CarBuzz recently discovered a new trademark filing for the “M7” and “M9” nameplates from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines. Interestingly, BMW had registered the “M7” name back in 2017 but didn’t pursue the model further at the time. Later, the company declared the M760i would stay the most powerful car in the 7 Series, effectively ending all hope of a dedicated M7 in the near future.
It is now evident that BMW’s M division never had strong feelings about developing a proper 7 Series sports sedan. Still, if rumors are to be believed, BMW would be working on the next-gen 7 Series, which would probably be the last one with an internal combustion engine. Hence, we assume that the high-end model could be named M7 as a grand tribute to the series.
On the other hand, the M9 has also been constantly rumored as a high-end supercar, similar to the i8, but with much more power under the hood. It might be a spiritual successor to the M1 even, although we aren’t sure about the mid-engine aspect.
Current rumors place the BMW M9 on the M8 CSL platform, which was already caught testing at the Nürburgring, probably as a testbed for the future BMW M9. Notably, the M8 CSL should be an upgraded version of the 617 hp M8, probably getting power from BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing around 700 hp.
Unfortunately, despite several reports and numerous rumors, nothing is concrete about the M7 and the M9. We’ll have to wait and see. We’ll keep you posted!
