The Lishi Lock Pick comes in specialized variants for various brands, including Ford, BMW, Chrysler, Nissan, Chevy, etc.
Does anyone remember the movie Escape Plan? The one where Sylvester Stallone, aka Ray Breslin, an ex-lawyer, breaks out of maximum-security prisons exploiting the weaknesses in the jail’s security systems, allowing the prison authorities to reinforce the prison’s defenses.
The Lock Picking Lawyer is a real-life Ray Breslin who has found a passion for breaking out of… err… into cars. The retired lawyer (just like Breslin) is celebrated in the world of lock-picking. His YouTube channel is a living and breathing testimonial to his uncanny skills. The YouTuber, who used to be a former business litigator, now spends much of his days making videos that explain the vulnerabilities present in many locking systems. Hence, he allows owners and buyers to make more informed and effective decisions about their security and privacy.
In a recent video, the lawyer-turned-lock-picker breaks into his own Ford Explorer ST in 50 seconds flat. To his aid was a mysterious little tool called the Lishi lock pick, about the size of a pocket knife. The particular instrument used in the video was specifically designed to unlock Ford vehicles, but other models are also available for pretty much every other brand.
The Lishi Lock Pick is a handy, all-in-one picking, tensioning, and decoding tool that can be used to replicate the biting code of any key. It comes with a set of graduated markings on the side that make placing the tip easy and straightforward to handle. The combination pry bar mechanism and the bit of graph for reference allow even amateurs to break into any vehicle within a matter of minutes.
However, it was a relief to see that the violated Ford model triggered the anti-theft alarm seconds after the lawyer broke into it. The owner was also immediately warned about the ongoing theft through a notification on his phone, thanks to the FordPass app. And though it’s somewhat reassuring to know that the Lishi tool cannot start the car since it lacks the required chip, your valuables are definitely at risk.
Now the question arises of why is such a tool even on sale. The Lock Picking Lawyer explains that the Lishi Lock Pick would come in very handy if you had been careless enough to leave both your keys inside the car. Not to mention that professional lock-picking services also need those tools to work, just like a mechanic can’t live without a wrench. Not to mention that most mechanics and professional auto repair shops also have similar door unlocking kits. You wouldn’t believe how often clients come to repair shops to have their doors unlocked. And sometimes, it’s the mechanic that locked the keys in, thanks to automatic door locks!
Still, the Lishi Lock Pick is available to anyone on the internet. With a bit of research, any Tom, Dick, and Harry can buy the tools needed to silently break into your car—but so is any other door-unlocking tool kit, though. They are just usually not as straightforward as this one.
So, what’s the takeaway here? Door locks aren’t the safest way to protect your car against theft. But one could also argue that a thief looking to steal your laptop sitting on the rear seat could also easily just drop a brick through a window. In simple terms, just don’t leave anything valuable inside your car ever.
Now, if you excuse me, I’ll take a minute and go get my GPS and sunglasses out of my glovebox…
