Fisker Ocean Electric SUV Will have a +536-HP Dual-Motor Option

Fisker Ocean crossover SUV is coming with dual-motor power and improved range too.

The company’s founder and CEO Henrik Fisker confirmed on Twitter that the upcoming Fisker Ocean Extreme would have a dual-motor 4WD configuration for a combined output of 545 horsepower. Consequently, the previously confirmed 302 hp powertrain might be available in the entry-level trim.

The Fisker Ocean will pack an 80 kWh battery pack, good enough for 250-300 miles of range, and be recharged from 15 to 80 percent in half an hour using a 150 kW DC adapter.

Furthermore, Henrik Fisker stated in another Tweet that the Fisker Ocean would come with a silicon carbide inverter and a unique clutch. Silicon semiconductors require less cooling and are lighter and more efficient. They provide numerous benefits such as increased range, faster charging times, and even lower manufacturing costs.

We still don’t have much information regarding the Ocean’s clutch. There’s a possibility that it might separate the powertrain from the wheels, allowing the SUV to freewheel, thus boosting the overall range—but we’ll have to wait for a confirmation on this one.

Fisker has signed a long-term manufacturing agreement with Austria’s Magna International. The Ocean SUV will be built on a slightly tweaked version of Magna’s architecture to meet Fisker’s requirements.

According to a recent press release, the production model of the electric crossover is expected to be showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show next November, with Fisker and Magna beginning the same month. The SUVs will be built at Magna’s carbon-neutral plant in Graz, Austria, which has already manufactured over 3.7 million vehicles for several carmakers.

However, all of this is just claims until now. And it’s worth mentioning that Fisker’s record is not as clean as you might expect. The company once bragged about a breakthrough in solid-state batteries that would have offered 500 miles of range with only a minute of charging. The company has also missed several deadlines in the past, but with an experienced partner like Magna, everything could be on track this time.

Although we don’t know about the dual-motor variant yet, the entry-level Fisker Ocean is priced at $37,499, excluding tax rebates. Interested customers can book their slots in exchange for a $250 refundable deposit and first deliveries are expected soon after production starts in the fourth quarter of next year.
