Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is a Coachbuilding Masterpiece Worth $28 Million

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail takes inspiration from the 1932 model bearing the same name and packs some seriously luxurious features and amenities.

Just a couple of days after the luxury automobile manufacturer announced it would reopen its coachbuilding department, Rolls-Royce has revealed its latest custom-built creation, a Rolls-Royce Boat Tail. The hand-built masterpiece will be available to only three buyers and cost a staggering $28 million.

The Boat Tail uses the same luxurious architecture as the company’s existing models like Phantom and Ghost. However, Rolls-Royce has handcrafted the whole bodywork with hammer-formed aluminum panels, just like the coachbuilding masters of the past.

Rolls-Royce took inspiration from a 1932 Boat Tail, which took its inspirations from, well, boats. The company claims that the body design required the fabrication of over 1,800 new unique parts. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, it took the luxury automaker 20 years of combined man-hours to complete! Even by the luxurious and attention to detail standards of Rolls-Royce, it’s too ambitious.

“Today marks a seminal moment for the House of Rolls-Royce,” said CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös during the announcement.

“We are proud to unveil Rolls-Royce Boat Tail to the world, and with it, the confirmation of coachbuilding as a permanent fixture within our future portfolio.”

Although all three Boat Tail models share a similar body style, each one has been individually customized according to the customer’s wishes. One of the examples shown is finished in a distinctive shade of blue. Rolls-Royce says the blue color evokes a nautical feeling and a calm silhouette. The color is subtle in the shade, but you can see crystal flakes as soon as the sun strikes. It took four years for the brand to built the car completely from scratch, so you know every small detail is bespoke.

However, the level of luxury and extravagance in the Boat Tail doesn’t end there. Namely, the Caleidolegno veneer wooden trims in the rear make the design reminiscent of a Yacht deck. Even the wrap-around windshield invokes the feeling of traveling on a Yacht. Meanwhile, the rear deck packs the most fascinating element of the whole car— a hosting suite!

With only a single press of a button, the rear deck opens with a flying butterfly gesture, revealing a double drinks refrigerator for some of the owner’s vintages. The same area also holds silver cutlery and porcelain plates from Paris. Furthermore, a cocktail table with matching bar stools is also built into the structure.

Although the UK previously restricted customers from changing body styles with custom creations, the introduction of Boat Tail is above the law’s amendments. Namely, Rolls-Royce has said that all future coachbuilt designs will be road-legal.
