The brand new 2022 BMW M4 Competition Convertible is here and has all it takes to be the top dog in its segment.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the M4 Competition Convertible comes with the large front grille that faced widespread criticism. To further distinguish it as an M car, it also comes with bright LED headlights, a rear diffuser, and aggressive-looking bumpers completing the car’s bold look.
However, the most appealing feature of the M4 Convertible is its retractable roof. According to BMW, the new fabric top can open or close in just 18 seconds while traveling at speeds up to 31 mph. Unlike traditional soft tops, it comes with multiple layers of insulation and holds good for all seasons. BMW offers two color options for the roof, regular black or shimmery Moonlight Black.
Just like its closed-top counterpart, the M4 Competition Convertible packs a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing impressive 503 hp and 479 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all four wheels. Its highly sophisticated all-wheel-drive system can operate in 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD modes. Furthermore, the rear-biased AWD system is optimized to deliver torque to the front wheels when additional traction is needed.
Apart from that, the throttle response of the M4 Competition Convertible is in a league of its own. It can hit 0-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 174 mph. However, BMW electronically limits the top speed to a safer 155 mph, but customers can unlock its full potential by ordering the optional M Driver’s Package.
Since the M4 Competition Convertible is a full-blown M car, the brakes are not to be taken lightly either. It comes with the best-in-class braking system complete with six-piston calipers and 15-inch discs at the front. At the rear, it comes with single-piston floating calipers and 14.6-inch rotors. For more efficient stopping power, customers can also upgrade to M Carbon ceramic braking system with bigger 15.7-inch and 15-inch discs at the front and rear, respectively, and gold-painted calipers.
As an all-around performance car, the M4 Competition Convertible got a special rear-axle subframe, underfloor bracing and the BMW M series’ signature Adaptive M suspension, and an Active M differential. Furthermore, the Convertible sits on lightweight alloy wheels measuring 19 inches front and 20 inches rear.
Coming to the interior, this power convertible has got leather-covered seats and a heated steering wheel. BMW also made sure everything can be accessed with just a touch by offering a massive 10.25-inch infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system also works in conjunction with an ambient lighting system and a Harman-Kardon audio system to create that perfect ambiance for a weekly country road drive. To make things sportier, customers can also opt for special, lighter M Carbon bucket seats.
BMW M4 Competition Convertible is expected to hit US dealerships this October, and prices start at $86,300, excluding the $995 destination charge.
