BMW Patents Definition CE-04 Electric Scooter Design

The BMW Definition CE-04 will be the brand’s first foray into the electric scooter market, and recent patent filings suggest it would have a very futuristic design.

After a long history of making first-class motorcycles, BMW Motorrad finally steps into the game of making electric scooters. The Bavarians introduced their highly conceptualized design in New York in November last year, where it was put under the banner of #NextGen vehicles.

Although what we saw last year was still a prototype, the company recently lodged the final published design with the European Union Intellectual Property office, meaning a production model should come soon.

BMW named the electric scooter Definition CE-04. However, it’s the design that’s more impressive. The sleek and long design with cuts and creases gives the scooter a highly futuristic look. The battery pack is placed profoundly low, just under the floorboard, providing the rider with a platform to put the legs on. Smart move, as it saves up a tremendous amount of space under the seat and lowers down the center of gravity, providing better stability and handling.

Meanwhile, the cockpit features a 10.25-inch display that shows all necessary information. Like in modern cars, the infotainment system can also connect to a smartphone. However, the Definition CE-04 lacks a double center stand and instead uses a single stand, which is worse for tight parking spaces. Also, there is no rear backrest/handle grip for pillion comfort.

Though the Definition CE-04 prototype already had a headlight, other updates like RVMs, turning indicators, and a front fender will help it achieve the road-legal status.

BMW hasn’t released any information on the powertrain or the battery of the Definition CE-04. However, in a very subtle way, it indicated that the scooter is not meant for thrilling rides and fun activity, rather for city-commuting.
