Toyota Aygo X is a Micro-Crossover Headed for Europe

Toyota will continue competing in the A-segment in Europe with an all-new Aygo X.

While other automakers are discontinuing A-segment models and concentrating their efforts on SUVs, Toyota has other ambitions. Namely, the company has revealed a concept called the “Aygo X prologue,” which is an all-new version of its popular Aygo city car.

Toyota’s official images and videos show an extensively redesigned Aygo with a bolder, more muscular, and sharper exterior. However, some of these details will most likely be toned down when the car enters production.

Anyone familiar with the regular Aygo can point out that the X Prologue concept has a raised height and sits on massive 19-inch wheels with heavily flared wheel arches. Hence, the new model might be a micro-crossover, similar to the Suzuki Ignis.

Furthermore, there are sharp wing-shaped LED daytime running lights that stretch over the two-layer bonnet, connected by a continuous light bar below the Toyota badge. Under the headlights sits a wider grille flanked by two hexagonal LED fog light units and triangular air intakes on either side.

The rear end looks even bulkier, if not Volvo-esque. It highlights a sleek tailgate with vertical ribbon-shaped taillights, also linked by an unbroken LED strip on each side. Meanwhile, there are action cameras in the side mirrors, which the company says are for “capturing and sharing special moments of exploration.”

Moreover, the wedged roofline features chunky roof rails, which add to the adventurous nature. Toyota also incorporated contrasting front and rear underbody skid plates, a dynamic C-pillar, and various edged styling elements, complementing the Aygo X Prologue’s rugged and sporty appearance.

The concept depicts a two-tone color scheme called ‘Sparkling Chilli Red,’ spicing up the Aygo X’s eye-catchy look. Toyota hasn’t revealed interior images of the mini-SUV concept yet.

The Japanese giant has confirmed that the Aygo X will sit on the same GA-B platform as the Yaris. The company has not released powertrain details, but reports suggest that it will feature a small-capacity internal combustion engine to keep the price low. Hence, the Aygo X will likely pack a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol unit, similar to the current-gen model. Also, the engine will probably pair to a five-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission.

Toyota hasn’t released pricing details or a launch date for the Aygo X micro-crossover. However, we expect a launch in early 2022 and a €12,000 price tag in EU countries.
