Toyota Updates the Hilux with a New 2.8L Diesel and Muscular Styling

The unbreakable Hilux gets a refresh for 2021 with a more powerful turbodiesel engine and many other upgrades.

Toyota incorporated significant enhancements in its refreshed Hilux pickup truck. The 2020 model comes with more power, improved ride comfort, and better technology.

Increased Power and More Powertrain Options

The latest generation of the Hilux comes with a larger and more powerful 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 201 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm. A manual or an automatic six-speed transmission is available to transfer all that power to the wheels; however, the manual transmission models have a maximum torque limit of 309 lb-ft.

Additionally, Toyota also offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 148 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 and 2,000 rpm.

Both variants come with 4WD as standard and are Euro 6d-compliant.

Improved Best in Class Drive Comfort

Pickup trucks are not typically known to offer the best comfort and ride quality, but Toyota says otherwise. The Japanese manufacturer has gone to extreme lengths to improve on-road comfort, including redesigning the leaf springs and bushings.

The brand-new Hilux also comes with retuned shock absorbers, an improved suspension system, and a variable-ratio power steering for better response.

What’s even more impressive is that all Hilux Double-Cab can wade through 700 mm of water, thanks to its ground clearance of 310 mm.

Advanced Design and Multimedia Features

From an aesthetic standpoint, the Hilux gets a more muscular makeover. The exterior looks more off-road-oriented now, with its new front grille and bumper, extra skid plate, and new fenders. Other changes include newly-designed LED headlights and taillights, exclusive fog lamp bezels, and a wide variety of wheel designs.

And if you are really serious about off-road, you’ll be pleased to know that more than 300 optional accessories are also available, including scuff plates, fender protectors, bed liners, and hardtops, just to name a few.
