R1200CL
BMW, most notable for their vehicles and motorcycles, has been producing the BMW R1200 CL since 2002. The R1200CL replaced BMW’s R1200C which had some similarities. However, the R1200CL added a variety of upgrades, improvements and changes to the motorcycle. Today, the R1200CL can still be found in various markets, all over the world. The CL in the name refers to Cruiser Luxury as BMW designated it as luxury touring motorcycle. While these motorcycles are no longer in production, they can be worked on by any BMW technician or owner, with the help of a BMW 1200CL repair manual.
The BMW R1200CL was based off of BMW’s flat-twin R1200C which was stylish and technologically equipped. Although the R1200C was one of BMW’s best-selling models in America, it was replaced with the CL which underwent many changes. The original BMW R1200CL was equipped with spacious seating and a shark-shaped snout which differed from the original C model. Similarities included chromed cylinder heads and exhaust pipes.
When the BMW R1200CL was launched, it was sported with heated seats. And, because it was able to reach a wider speed range, it also received a newer and lighter six-speed transmission. For quieter running, the gear teeth were re-angled. When the R1200CL was introduced, BMW’s standard ABS braking system was implemented into the motorcycle which helped increase safety and a smoother ride. The brake pedal was noteworthy because it required minimal movement to operate.
As far as the design of the R1200CL, the saddle was given a minor height increase and scalloped sides – which allowed for a more direct reach to the ground. Built-in backrests and additional room were also given to this motorcycle which was advantageous for riders who wanted to bring a passenger along. A good riding position can be achieved with the help of the wheelbarrow-designed handlebars. A lot of chrome touches were added to this motorcycle in order to improve it’s overall aesthetic, while also improving the look from the original R1200C.
Today, the R1200CL is no longer in production but that doesn’t change the fact that both the North American and European markets have had much success with the motorcycle. They can be found all over the world, and they are still regularly maintained by BMW enthusiasts, owners and even technicians. A BMW R1200 CL service manual can help guide anyone performing routine maintenance on these bikes to ensure that they last a lifetime.
