17523-3 Gearbox oil and filter, replace

1 Oil changes and filter replacement on mechanical gearboxes
Gearboxes with transparent level plug
1. Remove any sound baffles under the gearbox.
2. Clean round the drain and filling plugs (B and C) and around the oil filter housing.
3. Remove the drain plug (C) and drain the oil.
If the gearbox is equipped with a power take-off with separate drain plug, this must also be removed.
4. Remove the ventilation hose from the filler plug (B).
5. Unscrew the filler plug (B).
6. Only applies to TC-MWO Pinch the coolant hoses using clamping pliers.
Detach the coolant hoses from the oil filter housing.

7. Unscrew the oil filter housing and remove the seal and oil filter.
8. Fit a new oil filter and seal to the oil filter housing. Fit the filter housing onto the gearbox.
Note: The filter housing is to be positioned inside the range housing. Push in the filter housing until it
reaches the range housing. Tighten the bolts to 4 ±1 Nm and then torque tighten the bolts to 40 ±5 Nm.

9. Only applies to TC-MWO Connect the coolant hoses to the oil filter housing. Remove the clamping pliers.
Items 10-15 apply to oil filter replacement on VT gearboxes with a compact retarder RET-TH.

1.
Unscrew the lid (D) on the gearbox oil filter housing and remove the seal (E).

Screw puller 9998394 onto the adapter (F). Carefully tap the adapter and the support pipe (G) for the oil
filter straight out to prevent the adapter from jamming. Remove the oil filter (H) from the oil filter housing.
3. Clean components and sealing surfaces. Check that the sealing rings on the adapter (F) are not damaged;
if necessary replace them.
4. Fit a new oil filter (H) into the oil filter housing. Apply a thin film of oil onto the adapter (F) sealing ring,
insert the adapter with support pipe into the oil filter and oil filter housing.
5. Tap in adapter (F) carefully with a rubber mallet as straight as possible, to prevent the adapter from
fastening. The adapter should be flush with the oil filter housing.
6. Fit the lid (D) onto the oil filter housing with a new seal (E).
7. Fit the drain plug (C) into the gearbox. If the plug seal is damaged, change the sealing ring.
8. Fill the gearbox with oil until the oil level reaches the maximum marking on the gearbox housing (since the
oil level falls during driving when the oil filter housing fills up). Check the oil level through the transparent
level plug (A) (this must not be removed).

service information Maintenance intervals group 175.

9. Apply thread sealer to the filler plug (B) threads and screw the plug into the gearbox. The pipe on the plug
should have the same orientation pointing diagonally upwards as before removal. The pipe for the venting
hose should therefore point up at an angle.
10. Fit the ventilation hose onto the filler plug.
11. Refit any sound baffles under the gearbox.
Gearboxes without transparent level plugs
1. Remove any sound baffles under the gearbox.
2. Clean round the drain and filling plugs (1 and 2) and around the oil filter shield.
3. Remove the drain plug (2) and level/filler plug (1). Drain the oil.
If the gearbox is equipped with a power take-off with separate drain plug, this must also be removed.
4.
Remove the oil filter shield (A) for the oil filter.
5. Unscrew the oil filter (B) using tool 9996671.
6. Clean the sealing surface for the oil filter on the gearbox.

Note: Check that the sealing plate (E) is secure (it must not rotate), tightening torque 70±10 Nm for nipple
(C).
7. Check sealing ring (D) for oil filter shield and change it if it is not in good condition.
Old model oil filter shields have a foam plastic washer as a seal.
8. Oil the sealing ring on the new oil filter and tighten it by hand in accordance with the instructions on the
filter.
9. Put back the new oil filter shield and tighten it.
10. Fit the drain plug (2) in the gearbox with a new sealing washer.
11. Fill the gearbox with oil to the edge of the filling hole.
12. Fit the level/filler plug (1) in the gearbox with a new sealing washer.
Note: For information about oil quality, viscosity, oil change volume and oil change intervals, refer to
service information Maintenance intervals group 175.
13. Refit any sound baffles under the gearbox.
ZF gearbox
1. Drain plugs
2. Filler plug
Check of the oil level
1. Unscrew the filler plug (2) and check that the oil level reaches up to the edge of the filling hole.
2. Top up with oil as necessary.
Note: For information about gearbox oil quality, refer to service information Maintenance intervals group
175.
Oil change in the gearbox
1. Clean round the drain and filling plugs (1 and 2).
2. Remove the drain and filler plugs. Drain the oil. If the gearbox is equipped with a power take-off with
separate drain plug, this must also be removed.

3. Put back the drain plug.
4. Fill the gearbox with oil to the edge of the filling hole.
5. Put back the filler plug.
Changing the oil filter
1. Unscrew the oil filter on the gearbox using tool 9996671.
2. Clean the mating surface for the oil filter on the gearbox.
3. Oil the sealing ring on the new oil filter.
4. Screw on the oil filter until the rubber seal contacts the filter bracket. Then turn another ½ to ¾ turn by
hand.
Note: Do not use any tools!
5. Check the oil level and top up if necessary.
Note: Filters must not be cleaned. Old filters must always be scrapped.

2 Changing oil and filter on automatic gearboxes

Drain the oil through the sump drain plug (B).
3. Unscrew the old oil filters (A) using filter wrench 9999179.
4. Clean the mating surfaces for the oil filters on the gearbox.
5. Oil the sealing ring on the new oil filters and tighten them by hand, in accordance with the instructions on
the filters.
6. Install the drain plug (B) with a new seal.
7.
Clean round the oil filler cap and dipstick, and fill the gearbox with new oil.
Check of the oil level
1. Apply the parking brake, start the engine.
2. Move the gear selector between forward and reverse, and stop for a few seconds in each gear position.
3. Put the gear selector in neutral with engine speed at 1000 rpm.
4. Wipe the dipstick with clean, lint-free wiping paper.
5. The oil level should lie between the markings on the dipstick. Top up with oil if the level is below, or drain
off if it is above.
Note: Do a final check of the oil level with the gearbox at operating temperature, 70–90°C to ensure that it
is correct.
