DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Identification Codes The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN number is also found on the vehicle certification (VC) label. Vehicle Identification Number The first three vehicle identification number (VIN) positions are the world manufacturer identifier. 1FT — Ford Motor Company, USA, truck, completed vehicle. 1FD — Ford Motor Company, USA, incomplete vehicle. The fourth VIN position is the vehicle brake type and GVW code (all vehicles use hydraulic brakes). Z — 5,001 – 6,000 pounds GVWR with second generation air bags. Y — 4,001 – 5,000 pounds GVWR with second generation air bags. C — 4,001– 5,000 pounds GVWR with second generation air bags. D — 5,001 – 6,000 pounds GVWR with second generation air bags. Positions 5 through 7 indicate vehicle line, series and body type. R08 — 4x2 Regular cab (electric) R10 — 4x2, Regular cab. R11 — 4x4, Regular cab. R14 — 4x2, SuperCab. R15 — 4x4, SuperCab. C — 2.5L, SOHC, four cylinder, gas. U — 3.0L, V6, gas. V — 3.0L, V6, flex-fuel. X — 4.0L, V6, gas. The ninth VIN position is a check digit. The tenth VIN position is the model year code. Y — 2000. The last six VIN positions are an alphanumeric code for the vehicle build sequence. This is also the vehicle serial and warranty number. The vehicle certification (VC) label contains the manufacturer name, the month and year of manufacture, the certification statement, and the VIN. It also includes gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWR). Vehicle Certification (VC) Label — Canada (Typical) Vehicle Certification (VC) Label — Incomplete Vehicle (Typical) Paint Codes The first set of numbers listed indicate the vehicle primary body color. The second set of paint code numbers listed (if applicable) indicate a two-tone or accent body color. All colors are base coat/clear coat. B6 — Mandarin gold. B2 — Harvest Gold. E3 — Vermillion. FL — Toreador red. K7 — Bright Atlantic blue. LL — Wedgewood blue. RC — Medium platinum. SU — Amazon green. YZ — Oxford white. Radio Codes Z — AM/FM stereo with single CD player. 7 — AM/FM stereo with clock. 9 — AM/FM stereo cassette with clock. K — AM/FM stereo cassette with CD player. Y — Delete standard radio with clock. G — Delete radio chassis only, AM/FM stereo, all other components installed. R — Delete radio chassis only, AM/FM cassette, all other components installed. Tape Stripe Codes P — Platinum (XLT and 4x4 off-road). S — Silver (XLT and 4x4 off-road). R — Burnt orange. L — Pastel blue. Powertrain Calibration Information NOTE: Powertrain calibration information is limited to a maximum of five characters per line on the vehicle certification label. Because of this, calibration identification consisting of more than five characters will wrap to the second line on the VC label. Powertrain calibration information is printed in the lower right corner of the vehicle certification label. Only the base calibration information is printed. Revision levels will not appear, however, they can be found in On Line Automotive Service Information System (OASIS). For the current model year, Ford Motor Company is using three different protocols which describe powertrain base calibration. These protocols are designed to provide worldwide standardization for vehicle calibration. If the electronic calibration strategy has been used since 1998 and carried into the current model year, Protocol 1 will be used. Refer to Protocol 1 below. If the electronic calibration strategy has been used since 1999 and is carried into the current model year, Protocol 2 will be used. Refer to Protocol 2 below.
