Disengageblade(s),set parkingbrake,stopengine and wait until the blade(s)cometo a completestopbeforeremovinggrass catcher,emptyinggrass,uncloggingchute,removinganygrassor debris,or makinganyadjustments. Neverleavearunningmachineunattended.Alwaysturnoff blade(s),set parkingbrake,stopengine and removekey before dismounting. Use extracare whenloadingor unloadingthe machineintoa traileror truck. This machineshouldnot be drivenup or down ramp(s),becausethe machinecouldtip over,causingserious personalinjury.Themachinemustbe pushedmanuallyon ramp(s)to loador unloadproperly. Mufflerand engine becomehotand can causea burn.Do not touch. Disengageallattachmentclutchesanddepressthe brakepedal completelybeforeattemptingtostartengine. Yourmachineisdesignedto cut normalresidential grass of a heightno morethan 10".Do not attemptto mowthroughunusually tall, dry grass (e.g.,pasture)or piles of dry leaves.Dry grass or leavesmaycontactthe engineexhaustand/or build up on the mowerdeckpresentinga potentialfire hazard. SLOPE OPERATION Slopesare a majorfactorrelatedto loss of controland tip-over accidentswhichcan result in severeinjuryor death.All slopes require extra caution.If youcannot back up the slopeor if youfeel uneasyon it, do not mowit. Foryoursafety,use the SlopeGuide includedas partof this manual to measureslopesbeforeoperatingthis machineona slopedor hilly area. If the slopeis greaterthan15 degreesas shownon the Slope Guide,do notoperatethis machineon that area or seriousinjurycould result. Do: o Mowupanddown slopes,not across.Exerciseextremecaution whenchangingdirectionon slopes. • Watchfor holes,ruts,bumps,rocks,or other hiddenobjects. Uneventerraincouldoverturnthe machine.Tallgrasscan hide obstacles. Useslow speed.Choosea lowenoughspeedsettingso that you will nothaveto stop or shiftwhileon the slope.Tires may lose tractionon slopeseventhoughthe brakesarefunctioning properly.Alwayskeepmachinein gearwhen goingdownslopes to takeadvantageof enginebrakingaction. • Followthemanufacturer'srecommendations for wheelweights or counterweights to improvestability.Forrecommendations, call 1-800-659-5917. • Useextracarewithgrasscatchersor otherattachments.These can changethe stabilityof the machine. Keepallmovementonthe slopesslowandgradual.Do not make suddenchangesinspeedor direction.Rapidengagementor brakingcouldcausethe front of the machineto lift and rapidlyflip overbackwardswhich couldcauseseriousinjury. • Avoidstartingor stoppingon a slope. If tires losetraction,disen- gage the blade(s)and proceedslowlystraightdownthe slope. Do Not: • Donot turnon slopesunlessnecessary;then, turnslowlyand graduallydownhill,if possible. • Donot mow neardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments. The mower could suddenlyturnover if a wheelis overthe edgeof a cliff, ditch,or if an edge cavesin. • Donot try to stabilizethe machineby puttingyourfooton the ground. • Donot usea grass catcheron steepslopes. • Donot mowon wet grass.Reducedtractioncouldcausesliding. • Donot attemptto coastdownhill.Over-speedingmaycausethe operatorto lose controlof the machineresultingin seriousinjury or death. • Donot towheavypull behindattachments(e.g.loadeddumpcart, lawn roller,etc.)on slopesgreaterthan5 degrees.Whengoing down hill,the extraweighttends to pushthe tractorand may causeyou to loosecontrol (e.g.tractormay speedup, brakingand steeringabilityarereduced,attachmentmayjack-knifeandcause tractorto overturn). 4

CHILDREN Tragicaccidentscanoccur if the operator is notalert to the presence of children.Childrenareoftenattractedto the machineandthe mowing activity.Theydo notunderstandthe dangers.Neverassumethat childrenwill remainwhereyou lastsawthem. • Keepchildrenout of the mowingareaand inwatchfulcare of a responsibleadultotherthanthe operator. • Be alert and turnmachineoff if a childentersthe area. • Beforeand whilebacking,lookbehindand downfor small children. Nevercarry children,evenwith the blade(s)shut off.They may fall off and be seriously injured or interfere with safe machine operation. • Useextremecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,doorways, shrubs,trees or otherobjectsthat may block yourvisionof a child whomayrun into the machine. Toavoidback-overaccidents,alwaysdisengagethecutting blade(s)beforeshiftingintoReverse.Ifequipped,the "Reverse CautionMode"(bladesoperatewhilemachineridesin reverse) shouldnotbe usedwhenchildrenor othersare around. TOWING Towonlywith a machinethat hasa hitch designedfor towing.Do not attachtowedequipmentexceptat the hitchpoint. Followthemanufacturersrecommendation forweightlimitsfor towedequipmentandtowingonslopes.For recommendations, call 1-800-659-5917. Neverallowchildrenor othersin or on towedequipment. On slopes,theweightof thetowed equipmentmaycause lossof tractionandlossof control. Alwaysuseextra cautionwhentowingwith a machinecapableof makingtightturns(e.g."zero-turn"ride-onmower). Makewide turnsto avoidjack-knifing. Travelslowlyand allowextradistanceto stop. Do notcoastdownhill. SERVICE SafeHandlingof Gasoline Toavoidpersonal injury orpropertydamageuse extremecarein handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthe vaporsare explosive.Seriouspersonal injury canoccurwhengasolineis spilled on yourselforyour clotheswhichcan ignite. Washyourskin and changeclothesimmediately. • Useonly anapprovedgasolinecontainer. Neverfill containers inside a vehicleor on a truckor trailer bed witha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainerson the groundaway from yourvehiclebeforefilling. Whenpractical,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck or trailerand refuel it on theground.Ifthis isnotpossible,then refuelsuchequipmentona trailerwitha portablecontainer,rather than froma gasolinedispensernozzle. Keepthe nozzleincontactwith the rim of the fueltank or containeropeningat all timesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Donot use a nozzlelock-opendevice. Extinguishall cigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesof ignition. • Neverfuel machineindoors. Neverremovegascap or add fuelwhilethe engineis hotor running.Allowengineto coolat least two minutesbeforerefueling. Neveroverfill fuel tank. Filltankto no morethan 1/2 inchbelow bottomof filler neckto allowspace forfuel expansion. • Replacegasolinecap andtightensecurely. • If gasolineis spilled,wipeit off the engineandequipment.Move machineto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingthe engine. • To reducefire hazards,keepmachinefree of grass,leaves,or otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanup oilor fuel spillageandremoveany fuel soakeddebris. • Neverstorethe machineor fuelcontainerinside wherethere isan open flame,sparkor pilotlight as on a waterheater,spaceheater, furnace,clothesdryeror othergasappliances. Allowa machineto coolat least five minutesbeforestoring.

General Service • Never runanengine indoors orinapoorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, anodorless, anddeadly gas. • Before cleaning, repairing, orinspecting, make certain the blade(s) andallmoving partshave stopped. Disconnect thespark plugwireandground against theengine toprevent unintended starting. • Periodically check tomake sure theblades come tocomplete stopwithin approximately (5)fiveseconds after operating the blade disengagement control. Iftheblades donotstopwithin the this time frame, your machine should beserviced professionally byaSears orother qualified service dealer. • Check brake operation frequently asitissubjected towear during normal operation. Adjust andservice asrequired. • Check theblade(s) andengine mounting bolts atfrequent intervals forproper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade(s) fordamage (e.g., excessive wear, bent, cracked). Replace the blade(s) with theoriginal equipment manufacturer's (O.E.M.) blade(s) only, listed inthismanual. Useofpartswhich donot meet theoriginal equipment specifications may lead toimproper performance andcompromise safety! • Mower blades aresharp. Wrap thebladeorwear gloves, anduse extra caution whenservicing them. • Keep allnuts, bolts, andscrews tight tobesure theequipment is in safeworkingcondition. • Nevertamperwiththe safetyinterlocksystemor othersafety devices.Checktheir properoperationregularly. • Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stopthe engine,disconnectthe spark plugwire(s) and groundagainstthe engine.Thoroughly inspectthe machinefor anydamage.Repairthe damagebefore startingandoperating. • Neverattemptto makeadjustmentsor repairsto the machine whilethe engineis running. • Grasscatchercomponentsandthedischargecoverare subject to wearand damagewhich couldexposemovingparts or allow objectsto bethrown.Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheck componentsandreplaceimmediatelywithoriginalequipment manufacturer's(O.E.M.)partsonly,listedinthis manual.Useof partswhichdo not meetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmay leadtoimproperperformanceandcompromisesafety! • Donot changethe enginegovernorsettingsorover-speedthe engine.The governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeed of the engine. Whenattachingbatterycables,alwaysconnectthePOSITIVE(Red) wireto its terminalfirst,followedby the NEGATIVE(Black)wire. Forshippingreasons,bothbatterycables on yourequipmentmay havebeenleftdisconnectedfromthe terminalsat the factory.To connectthe batterycables,proceedasfollows: NOTE:Thepositivebatteryterminalis markedPos. Removethe plasticcover,if present,fromthe positivebattery terminaland attachthe redcableto the positivebatteryterminal (+)with the bolt and hexnut. See Figure1. 2. Shipping Brace Removal Makesurethe ridingmower'sengineis off, removetheignitionkey, andset the parkingbrakebeforeremovingthe shippingbrace.Refer Itothe Operationsectionfor instructionsonhowto setthe parking lbrake. • Locatetheshippingbrace,ifpresent,andaccompanyingwarning tag foundon the rightsideof the mower,betweenthe discharge chutedeflectorandthe cuttingdeck.
