115 HP
Installing an outboard motor on your boat will obviously make your life easier, providing ample propulsion so you can just sit back and relax. It’s a lot easier than rowing and saves a lot of time and energy that can be better spent on more productive things (or just fishing and chill). Moreover, once you get used to the somewhat eerie controls, it is smooth sailing from there. Whether you use your marine vessel for pleasure or business, an outboard motor is a worthy addition.
However, once you purchase an outboard engine, keeping it in tip-top shape is a whole different story. And if your outboard motor is as old as millennials these days, chances are it’s a Johnson Evinrude, two names that started as separate entities involved in manufacturing affordable yet powerful outboard motors in the 1900s. Johnson Outboards was founded in 1903, in a small barn somewhere in Terre Haute, Indiana, while Evinrude Outboard Motors was breathed to life by Ole Evinrude four years later and around 300 miles north. No need to mention that, with over 200 years of experience in total, Johnson Evinrude knows a thing or two about outboard motors.
Internal combustion engines were a relatively new thing back then, and there was a lot to explore. As a result, both companies were immensely successful and played an essential role in furthering the industry by developing radical designs.
Unfortunately, Ole Evinrude had to sell his company due to his wife's rapidly deteriorating health—but his innovative mind wasn't ready for retirement just yet. Indeed, while working from home, Ole came up with a revolutionary two-cylinder outboard engine design and formed the ELTO Outboard Motor Company in 1921. After a second successful stint in the outboard motor business, Ole merged ELTO with his original company and created the Outboard Marine Corporation that later merged with Johnson Outboards. The Outboard Marine Corporation was very prosperous and enjoyed a majority market share before struggling to survive later in the century and eventually going bankrupt in 2000.
Of course, despite being highly reliable, outboard motors that old need special care and expert knowledge that is rare to come by these days. For that reason, it can be quite challenging to fix them without spending a fortune. But don't worry, that's where we come in!
