2. OVERVIEW 2.1 EOS KISS DIGITAL Body While retaining the same digital specifications as the EOS 10D, the EOS KISS DIGITAL is a lightweight and compact digital AF SLR affordable by ordinary consumers. In the digital EOS lineup, it is ranked lower than the EOS 10D. Table 001 compares the specifications between the EOS KISS DIGITAL and EOS 10D. General Information 5 EOS 10D EOS KISS DIGITAL Fig. 002 Comparison of body size, viewfinder, LCD panel, and Mode Dial
1) Digital features (1) Large, CMOS sensor with approx. 6.30 megapixels Like the EOS 10D, the EOS KISS DIGITAL uses a CMOS sensor having approx. 6.30 effective megapixels (out of a total of 6.50 megapixels). (See Fig. 003) To reduce sensor costs, the chip size has been made smaller without changing the image format. More sensor chips can thus be made from a single wafer. (2) Processing Parameters The processing parameters set by the maker consists of the "Standard" type for the EOS 10D and a new processing parameter type for obtaining vivid and crisp colors. (Fig. 005) In the Basic Zone modes, Parameter 1 is set automatically. This is good for users who know little about setting processing parameters and image editing. Note: Parameter 1 adds one stop to the user setting's processing parameter's contrast, sharpness, and color saturation settings. (The settings themselves cannot be changed.) (3) Recording quality and recordable capacity further expanded Except for the JPEG quality (Middle/Fine only, same as with the EOS D60) in the RAW+JPEG mode, the recording quality and file sizes are the same as with the EOS 10D. Note: With the EOS 10D, a Custom Function enabled the RAW+JPEG mode to be used with all JPEG quality settings. Since the EOS KISS DIGITAL does not have Custom Functions, only the JPEG Middle/Fine setting is possible with RAW. (4) White balance Everything is the same as with the EOS 10D except that the color temperature cannot be set manually. General Information 6 Fig. 004 EOS KISS DIGITAL CMOS Sensor Fig. 003 EOS 10D CMOS Sensor Fig. 005 Processing Parameter Selection Screen Fig. 006 Parameter 1 Setting. Vivid and crisp colors Standard parameters
(5) ISO speed In addition to ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 is also provided. Note: To reduce costs, the installation of the CMOS sensor is different from the EOS 10D. Since noise at fast ISO speeds will be more than with the EOS 10D, the ISO speed extension feature has not been provided. (6) External interface The USB digital terminal will be compatible with PTP connections and PictBridge. The PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) connection is already incorporated in the PowerShot G3 (Menu/Communications/PTP). It does not require a dedicated driver, so you can just connect the camera to the personal computer and then view, upload, or delete the images in the camera. It is compatible with Windows XP and Mac OS X. When the OS recognizes the camera, "Scanner and Camera Wizard" starts up automatically in Windows XP or "iPhoto" starts up in Mac OS X. (7) PictBridge PictBridge is a standard that enables direct printing of images from the camera regardless of the brand of the camera and printer. The EOS KISS DIGITAL's PictBridge specifications are basically the same as Canon Camera Direct. The only difference over Canon Camera Direct is that you also can select the paper type (plain paper, pro photo paper, etc.) and Printing Effects (Image optimization). If you connect the camera to a CP-series, PictBridge-compatible Canon printer (wallet-size photo printer), the image will be printed according to Canon Camera Direct specifications (printing speed is faster than PictBridge). Note1: For direct printing via PictBridge, the menu's [Communications setting} must be set to [PTP]. Note2: PictBridge is supported by Canon, Fuji Photo Film, Hewlett-Packard, Olympus, Seiko Epson, and Sony. 2) Shooting functions The AF unit, metering sensor, and shutter unit are the same as the EOS 10D's. The AF modes (not user selectable), metering modes, shooting modes, and operation method are the same as the EOS KISS 5's. The exposure can be set in 1/3-stop increments. (1) Compatible with EF-S (Short back focus) lenses The EOS KISS DIGITAL's lens mount is compatible with EF lenses and the newly developed EF-S lens, which optimally matches the sensor size. The EF-S lens has a shorter back focus, and the image circle is also smaller to match the EOS KISS DIGITAL's image format of 22.7 ~ 15.1 mm. This enables the lens to have a shorter overall length and a smaller width even for the wide angle end. The EF-S 18- 55mm f/3.5-5.6 (28-90mm in 135 format) will be marketed at the same time as the camera as the optimum lens. The EOS KISS DIGITAL's main reflex mirror has a rear swing-up mechanism that works while the mirror is up. This is to prevent the mirror from hitting the EF-S lens' rear lens element. If the EF-S lens is used with the EOS 10D or other EOS camera, the main mirror will hit the EF-S lens' rear lens element. Therefore, the EF-S lens has been designed so that it cannot be physically attached to other EOS cameras. The back of the lens will hit the camera lens mount's inner plate (the lens cannot fit into the mount position). The EF-S lens can be mounted on the EOS KISS DIGITAL by aligning it with the dedicated index mark (Fig. 009). Note:Back Focus is the distance between the vertex of the rear lens element surface and the focal plane. The minimum designed back focus for EF lenses is 38 mm, and for EF-S lenses, 33.5 mm. (The back focus of the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens is 35 mm.) (2) Built-in Flash The distance between the optical axis to the built-in flash's center is about 86.5 mm, on par with the EOS KISS 5's 87.15 mm. This reduces the chances of red eye occurring and the chances of the attached lens obstructing the flash coverage. General Information 8 EF lens mount index mark. EF-S lens mount index mark.
