In 2003, Volvo debuted the Volvo V50 at the Bologna Motor Show. It was designated as the station wagon variant of the Volvo S40. The V50 T5 AWD was given a straight-5 2.5 L engine with a light pressure turbocharger, 4-valves per cylinder and a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing — producing 217 hp and 236 lb⋅ft of torque. In Europe, diesel options included a 2.4 L turbocharged D5 engine which provided 178 hp and 258 lb⋅ft of torque.

The V50 was the recipient of some minor modifications to its interior, a revising of its front fascia, optional active xenon headlights, optional D5, increased power and torque of the T5 engine, with a 6-speed manual and a 1.8 Flexifuel engine.

In the United Staes, the V50 T5 was only available as an automatic AWD model with the R-Design trim package in 2009. Within Europe, both manual and automatic options could be readily found. The D5 inline five diesel engine was no longer available by the time the 2010 model year was rolled out; only the 1.6 Land 2.0 L diesel inline engine was available.

In 2010, the larger, brand new, circular Volvo logo graced the front of the grill. Moreover, a manual transmission was briefly available with the T5 AWD variant in the United States. Sadly in North America, the naturally aspirated 5-cylinder engine, AWD, and manual transmission were all discarded for the 2011 model year, leaving only the automatic, FWD T5 in the base and R-Design trims. In North America, the model year of 2011 was the last model year manufactured and marketed V50 in the United States and Canada.
