760
The 760 was introduced to the U.S. auto market in 1982, for them as the 760 GLE saloon, having already been released in both Sweden and Britain. Initially, it was only available only as a 4-door sedan, but eventually, in 1985, a 5-door estate was unveiled by Volvo. Although these vehicles aren’t as pervasive as some of its competitors, doesn’t mean you’ll never find one to work on. So when you do come across one, make sure you got your handy Volvo 760 service with you.
For the 1988 model year, the 760 received multiple updates and revisions. Externally, the most obvious of the over 2000 changes were the revised front sheet metal, including an aluminum hood, new aerodynamic headlights, and recessed windscreen wipers. Internally, all 760s received a revised dashboard which was angled towards the driver, a new stereo system, and a 3-position tilt steering. Underneath, all the saloons received the same multi-link independent rear suspension introduced on the 780.
The 760 Estate received similar changes, except for the fact that it continued to use the live rear axle. This was due to the weight increase: the new rear suspension weighed roughly 88 lb more than the old one. Causing, the need for the added support and stability the live rear axle provided.
In 1990, the 760’s final production year, Volvo 760 saloons were given some minor interior changes including, taillights in the style of the Volvo 780 among other things. The 760 was discontinued after the 1990 model year and was replaced by the Volvo 960.
Although the 760 is no longer in production, doesn’t mean you can’t still spot them here and there. If you ever find yourself working on one of these vehicles, having a Volvo 760 repair manual ensures the job will go more smoothly.
