The first part contains information and important notes on the subject of “Trailer towing”. The technical prerequisites for towing trailers or the function of the trailer control unit, for example, are explained here. Listed in the second part are the trailer loads (braked, unbraked and drawbar load) of the vehicles (categorised according to engine performance) and, where possible, the prerequisites that have to be met to uprate the trailer load on a vehicle. Volkswagen vehicles are built according to the latest findings in safety engineering. For this reason we recommend that only Volkswagen genuine replacement parts are used. It has been established that these parts are reliable, safe and suitable. Despite constant appraisal of the market, we cannot assess other products on these points, even when in isolated cases they have been passed by official inspectors or have been granted official approval. Therefore, we cannot, of course, as‐ sume any liability if these products are installed. 1.1 Parts certificates The parts certificates in accordance with § 19(3) no. 4 (German Regulations Governing Use of Vehicles for Road Traffic) can be found on the ServiceNet. 1.2 Legal requirements outside Germany The country-specific legislation and guidelines must be ob‐ served. If further clarity is required, contact your importer. Amarok 2011 ➤, Amarok 2017 ➤, Caddy 2004 ➤, Caddy 2011 ➤, Caddy 2016 ➤, Caddy 2 ... Trailer towing guide - Edition 02.2023 1. Foreword 1

It should be observed in this regard that, since the start of 1988, a 13-pin trailer socket is installed in place of the common 7-pin one. This new socket allows retroactive connection of additional electrical consumers from the trailer that had no means of con‐ nection in the previous socket, e.g. a reversing light. If the trailer to be towed has a 7-pin connector, an adapter cable available from Volkswagen dealerships can be used. 2.2 Retrofitted towing attachment If the vehicle is to be retrofitted with a trailer hitch, the follow‐ ing should be observed: The towing device is a safety item. Therefore, only a type approved device designed specifically for the vehicle should be used. It is recommended that a towing attachment from the Volkswagen accessory programme is used as it is the same as the factory fitted devices. For these towing attachments, the installation instructions supplied also have our approval. 2.3 Ball head Length: 350 - 420 mm, measured from centre of ball head to road sur‐ face Distance: Minimum of 65 mm, measured from centre of ball head to bumper 2.4 Trailer socket The trailer socket must be connected in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions to the electrical system of the pulling vehicle. When installing, observe the relevant current flow diagrams and the installation instructions from the manufacturer of the towing device. 2.4.1 7-pin trailer socket If more than the allocated consumers are to be connected on a trailer with 7-pin socket, a second 7-pin socket must be instal‐ led. Assignment of the pins should be carried out in accordance with DIN ISO 1724 as follows: Amarok 2011 ➤, Amarok 2017 ➤, Caddy 2004 ➤, Caddy 2011 ➤, Caddy 2016 ➤, Caddy 2 ... If, for example, a bike trailer or caravan is to be towed with your vehicle, we recommend that a 13-pin trailer socket is used at all times. Assignment of the pins should then be carried out in accord‐ ance with DIN ISO 11446 as follows: ♦ 1 - Left turn signal switch ♦ 2 - Rear fog light ♦ 3 - Earth for current circuit 1 to 8 ♦ 4 - Right turn signal switch ♦ 5 - Right driving light ♦ 6 - Brake lights ♦ 7 - Left driving light ♦ 8 - Reversing light ♦ 9 - Terminal 30 (permanent positive) ♦ 10 - Terminal 15 (charge battery in trailer) ♦ 11 - Not assigned ♦ 12 - Not assigned ♦ 13 - Earth for terminal 15/30 2.5 Trailer detector control unit -J345- General description: The trailer detector control unit -J345- detects from a power draw of minimum 5 W 1) the “trailer operation” and transmits this information to various control units via the CAN data bus. Information concerning checking the control unit, fault displays and fault finding can be found in the workshop manual ⇒ Elec‐ trical system; Rep. gr. 94; Towing bracket or in ⇒ Vehicle diag‐ nostic tester. Note On vehicles with trailer detector control unit -J345-, the trailer warning lamp is no longer fitted. Faults in the wiring or bulb failures detected by the trailer control unit are indicated either by the bulb failure warning lamp of the vehicle or in the multi‐ function display. 2.5.1 Retrofitting trailer detector control unit -J345- Retrofitting a trailer detector control unit -J345- (approved by Volkswagen) is possible but not easy because it has to be connected to the CAN data bus of the vehicle. Then, the control unit must be coded ⇒ page 4 . Note It is recommended that alternative control units available on the open market and not approved by Volkswagen are avoi‐ ded without exception. If equipment of this type is installed, the guarantee will become void. Generally, such equipment is connected to the tail lights and not integrated in the electrical system of the vehicle, which makes far more sense. The con‐ sequence is that faulty diagnoses in the bulb failure warning system or malfunctions can occur, among other things. Further‐ more, dimmed bulbs (combined brake and tail light) cannot be actuated. 2.5.2 Coding trailer detector control unit - J345- The coding procedure is described in ⇒ Electrical system; Rep. gr. 94; Towing bracket or in ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester. 2.6 Map-controlled engine cooling Since higher demands are placed on the map-controlled engine cooling system when a trailer is being towed, the cooling sys‐ tem is uprated in conjunction with factory fitted towing attach‐ ments if this is a technical necessity. This is carried out, for example, by installing a more powerful or second radiator fan and/or larger radiator. Vehicles with air conditioning and those prepared for topical climates with air conditioning already have an uprated, map-controlled engine cooling system. The cooling system should also be uprated if a towing attach‐ ment is retrofitted and provision for this has not been made in the factory. If this is not done, overheating of the cooling system cannot be ruled out if the engine is placed under high load (gradients, high ambient temperatures, heavy trailer). Dur‐ ing conversion, the parts listed in the ETKA (Electronic Parts Catalogue) must be used for map-controlled engine cooling in Amarok 2011 ➤, Amarok 2017 ➤, Caddy 2004 ➤, Caddy 2011 ➤, Caddy 2016 ➤, Caddy 2 ... It is only possible to choose not to uprate the cooling system if assurance can be given that the engine will only be placed under medium load, e.g. ♦ stay well below the gross combination weight ♦ high ambient temperatures are unlikely ♦ the vehicle is not driven up long, steep gradients ♦ no very long journeys are undertaken In any case, the coolant temperature gauge must be observed carefully. If the needle of the display moves too far into the hot zone, the speed of the vehicle should be reduced immediately. In an emergency, it may even be necessary to stop and allow the engine to cool down. In this instance, the engine should be allowed to idle for about 2 minutes to avoid any build up of heat. Note ♦ On vehicles with air conditioning, map-controlled engine cooling can be assisted by switching off the air conditioning system. This also improves the drive-off ability of the vehicle and trailer combination and overtaking is safer. ♦ If in exceptional circumstances the choice is made not to uprate the cooling system, the vendor must inform the buyer of the vehicle of this fact. 2.7 Exterior mirror If the traffic behind the trailer cannot be seen with the exteri‐ or mirrors fitted as standard, additional mirrors are necessary. Both exterior mirrors must be fitted in this instance to extension brackets that can be folded in and the mirrors must be adjusted so that the view to the rear is assured at all times. 2.8 Uprated shock absorbers and coil springs ♦ Diving or dipping of the rear end between pulling vehicle and trailer can be avoided with the use of uprated shock absorbers and coil springs on the rear axle. These shock absorbers and springs can also be retrofitted in many cases by a Volkswagen workshop, unless of course they were in‐ stalled ex-factory. For allocation of the shocks and springs refer to ⇒ Electronic Parts Catalogue “ETKA”. ♦ Diving or dipping and trailer snaking can also be avoided with stabilisation aids that can be procured in most Europe‐ an countries via Volkswagen dealerships and also installed by them.
