Manufactured by Subaru since 1997, the Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV. The Impreza and the Forester share the platform. The Forester is one of those vehicles that's been around for ages. So, whether you’re working on a 1997 Forester or a 2019 Forester, make sure you grab a Subaru Forester repair manual before you touch that engine.

The Forester was debuted to the world in 1995, at the Tokyo Motor Show as the Streega concept. It wasn’t until February 1997, that it was made available for purchase in Japan, and to the US market in late 1997. The Forester was one of the first crossover SUVs. Built in the style of a car, it still maintained higher h-point seating, taller stance, and an AWD drive train. It used the Impreza platform but had the Outbacks larger 2.5 L 165 hp (123 kW; 167 PS) DOHC EJ25D four-cylinder boxer engine, which produced 220 N⋅m (162 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The second generation was debuted at the 2002 Chicago Auto Show. It was based on the Impreza platform and featured many improvements. The 2003 Forester featured weight-saving improvements such as perforated rails, an aluminum hood, and a hydro-formed front sub-frame. However, the most significant change was under the hood; Subaru offered a 2.5 L engine in either turbocharged or naturally aspirated. In the US, the naturally aspirated ─ non-turbo ─ X and XS were released in 2003. The turbocharged XT version was released in 2004. The XT model had a 2.5 L turbocharged DOHC engine, while the X and XS models were given a 2.5 L SOHC engine. Both engines have timing belt driven camshafts. For those needing more power for their Forester XT, one can replace the intercooler and turbocharger with STI components which are readily available.

By the third generation, Forester began moving away from the traditional wagon design and towards becoming a crossover SUV. It was larger in nearly every dimension and featured a sloping roofline with more cargo space. In 2008, the North American version made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Fourth-generation US models went on sale in March 2013. Models 2.5i in base, Premium, Limited, and Touring versions, and performance-oriented turbocharged 2.0XT in Premium and Touring versions. Base and Premium model 2014 Foresters could be equipped with the Lineartronic CVT or a manual six-speed transmission.

The fifth generation 2019 Subaru Forester was on March 28, 2018, at the New York International Auto Show. Subaru moved the 2019 model year Forester to the Subaru Global Platform. As you enjoy your 2019 Forester, don't forget to show it some TLC. Go grab your Subaru Forester service manual today!
