In 1998, the Saab 9-3 was a compact car produced by the Saab. The 9-3 had the same platform as the Opel Vectra. It was Saab's entry-level model. The 9-3, like all Saabs, was a FWD vehicle. It was available as a four-door wagon, sedan, and a two-door convertible. It ⎼ like many Saab vehicles ⎼ tends to be a reliable vehicle, but if you’re experiencing difficulties with yours make sure you have a Saab 9-3 workshop manual with you to do the job right the first time around.

The first generation 9-3, a redesign of the Saab 900 and was launched in 1998. The higher powered version of the 9-3 was the Viggen. It had a stock turbocharged 2.3L engine. By 2002, the second-generation model was debuted at the North American International Auto Show. This was the generation that got rid of the hatchback design.

In 2006, a special ""20 Years Edition Aero Convertible"" for the American market was launched at the Los Angeles Auto Show to celebrate 20 years since the introduction of the Saab 900 convertible. It had two optional engines were a 2.0 L turbo 4-cylinder and a new 2.8 L turbo 6-cylinder. The 4-cylinder produced 210hp (160 kW;218 PS) and had 12.3 psi maximum turbo boost pressure and turned out while the 6-cylinders had 8.7 psi boost and turned out 250hp (190 kW;258 PS). The 2.0 L 16 valve turbo 4-cylinder model was marketed in the United States as the 2.0T.

A complete reworking of the dashboard was ordered for the 2007 model. While the 2008 model is touted as all-new, the majority of under skin enhancements occurred for the 2007 model year. The suspension went from borderline harsh to firm, and the cabin was quieted considerably. In the U.S. market, only the 2.0 L 16 valve turbo engine and the 2.8 L V6 turbo were available as options. The 2.0 model's manual transmission was changed to a 6-speed, from a 5-speed.

The 2008 range, presented at the Saab Festival included new frontal styling inspired by the Saab Aero-X, a clamshell hood, new door panels, and frosted rear lamps. The Turbo X was first shown at the North American debut at the New England Auto show in late November. Saab also released an AWD version of the Aero, with the system dubbed "XWD", in March 2008. In 2009, Saab released the limited-edition Turbo X to the 9-3 lineup. By 2010, the turbocharged V6 was removed from the line and all models were produced with the 2.0 L turbo-4. The 9-3 received some revisions in 2011.

As of May 2014, Saab production due to Qingbo Investment, one of NEVS shareholders, being unable to reach a financing agreement. Mahindra & Mahindra agreed to buy a majority of NEVS stock, at the end of 2014. And in February 2015, a press statement was released saying that the remaining 100 cars that were stuck on the halted production would be completed. And with that, the history of the Saab 9-3 is complete. There seems to be no move to resurrect the 9-3 or it’s nameplate any time in the foreseeable future. However if your 9-3 is in need of TLC, grab yourself a Saab 9-3 service manual and get to work.
