The Pontiac Grand Prix is one of the better-known models produced by the brand. The Grand Prix saw a production life spanning more than 40 years, making it quite a successful vehicle by any measure. Earlier models were known for their luxurious style and interior, but later models are recognized for their reliability. Regardless of what make and model you drive, you can find a Pontiac Grand Prix service manual pdf online to walk you through routine and unexpected servicing needs!

The Grand Prix was produced between 1962-2008 and quite a lot changed during that period. All models through the fourth generation (ending in 1987) were marketed as luxury vehicles and were designed with that focus in mind. The first generation of Grand Prix vehicles were equipped standard with a 6.4L V8 engine, which was updated in 1965 to a 6.6L V8. During this time, owners could also choose between a 6.9L or 7.0L V8 engine too.

The second generation was fairly brief and changes were primarily cosmetic. The vehicle became even longer, and featured a more modern appearance style. The main difference was the elimination of the 6.9L V8 engine, as it was replaced with a beefier 7.5L V8.

In 1973, a third iteration of Grand Prixs were produced. These were designed to accommodate new federal standards for safety and emissions. Because of this, third generation Grand Prixs have large bumpers and offer smaller, fuel economy-friendly engines in addition to their bigger ones. These included a 4.9L and 5.7L V8 engine that resulted in reduced emissions.

The year 1978 signaled the fourth (and final luxury) generation of the Grand Prix. The vehicle now became noticeably smaller as it began a transition onto a smaller body platform. The Grand Prix was also available for sale with V6 engines, including the 3.8L and 4.1L V6. Pontiac also downsized their V8 engines, offering the option between a 4.3L, 4.9L, or 5.0L V8 engine.

Between 1988 and 1996, the Grand Prix model was sold as a mid-sized vehicle. It was built on the smaller W body, and signaled the full elimination of all V8 engines. The Grand Prix was now sold exclusively with V6 engines, although a four-cylinder was also briefly offered. This reflected Pontiac’s new aim for the model, which now targeted more economy-oriented buyers.

In the Grand Prix’s sixth generation, it slowly started to move back towards its roots as the model was now a full-sized car. It only used V6 engines (either a 3.1L or 3.8L) with a 4-speed automatic transmission. They also offered trim styles with supercharged engines, a sign that the vehicle was once again focused on performance.

2004 was the beginning of the end for the Grand Prix. Seventh generation Grand Prixs used two different versions of a 3.8L V6 engine, but also offered a 5.3L V8 engine, the first Grand Prix to use a V8 engine since 1987. The newest Grand Prix models are known for their superior performance and sleek styling.

The Pontiac Grand Prix is a classy model with a very long history of changes. The vehicle was originally a luxury vehicle, but transitioned to a smaller, economy vehicle, and finished as a sporty performance car. You can find a Pontiac Grand Prix repair manual online for any year or model you drive! Anyone can learn and understand more about their car if they take the time to use a repair manual!
